I have noticed two ARP tasks sent to my computer that do not resume after being suspended. Instead, they stay in a "Waiting to run" state.
----------------------------------------They appear to use up one of my three cores for work fetch purposes, i.e. BOINC won't fetch another single-core task while the ARP task is in this state. I have to abort the task to get more work. Any ideas on how to resolve this? [Edit 1 times, last edit by hartacus at Jun 23, 2025 4:50:12 AM] |

"Waiting to Run" is not suspended but it is READY TO RUN when it is their turn.
----------------------------------------How many cores are available on your computer to run BOINC tasks? Have you successfully run ARP WU's on that computer? If not, check the system requirements for ARP. https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/topic...rica%20Rainfall%20Project See also this link: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/topic.s?shortName=minimumreq How many WU's are in the TASKS window? And what is their state (Running, waiting to run, paused, suspended???) Check your TRANSFERS tab to make sure there is nothing paused for any reason. "Retry Pending Transfers" if there are. Thanks for your reply.
I have three cores available for BOINC tasks (plus GPU running other projects). The issue occurs when I am running two other single-core CPU tasks - the ARP task remains as "Waiting to run" even though there is an available slot and sufficient system resources to run it. I have even tested suspending all other BOINC projects but the ARP task does not "take its turn". In case I missed this, this issue occurs when the task has already started and completed some non-trivial percentage of progress. I would not expect any pending transfers to affect a task mid-run. |

GPU tasks take up a % of a CPU as well. Could that be the problem.
Is the waiting CPU task a resend? They don't necessarily run in deadline order. Try suspending tasks until the waiting one runs and then gradually resume the suspended tasks. Mike |

I have suspended all other projects and tasks, both CPU and GPU, and the ARP task does not resume.
I don't think the GPU needing a % of CPU to run is a problem - I only run 3 cores of BOINC and leave 1 core free, so there's usually plenty of overhead for GPU tasks and other computing. And the task starts initially, it just won't resume once it has been suspended for any reason (computer restart, high CPU use, etc). |

Perhaps it is waiting on memory or disk space. Suspending other tasks doesn't necessarily free up memory. Try looking in the BOINC event log for messages that might indicate why it is waiting.

One item that I forgot to mention which may or may not have an effect but is in the second reference link - footnote 6 for ARP: have you opted to leave the work units in memory rather than swap them out?
Device Profile: Custom Profile: Advanced Options Under Memory Usage Leave applications in memory while suspended set to YES |

As people keep adding questions and suggestions...
What hardware, Operating System and BOINC version? Also, is the machine only running BOINC projects or is there other activity at the same time? As individual details, those may not be significant, but some combination might be the clue we're looking for :-) By the way, once an ARP1 or MCM1 task goes "dead in the water" it's quite common for a BOINC restart to be needed to get it going again, and even then that's not always guaranteed... Also, be aware that some GPU tasks may be sent out with a requirement for a complete CPU core, especially if using OpenCL... Cheers - Al. P.S. We can't suss out your system data, O/S and BOINC version information on WCG, whereas we might be able to at many other BOINC projects; every little helps!... |
