Spare cycles

Forgive the stupid question here but I run Linux and don't care to
be Windows savy. That being said our group has a nice Win 2003
dual CPU server to play with. I though I would put its cycles to good
use and installed WCG agent.

My concern is that I get logged out when I'm away for a while,
and it doesn't appear that the the WCG agent is allowed to run
after I get logged out. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

What is the best way to ensure that the agent can utilize this
underutilized machine when I'm not sitting there.

Thanks
Joe.

Re: Spare cycles

Hi Joe,

Two ways you can go here.

Firstly you can follow the instructions here about installing the UD agent as a service, however, as you're more use to Linus and the the BOINC client you might prefer to install that instead. (Yes, it does work on Windows, but isn't adverised yet.)

As it happens, I'm actually looking closely at my Win 2003 servers since that AIDS project came on line a few days ago right now. (Only the UD agent is processing this project at the moment.)

The new project uses a lot more RAM than the old one. (25mb RAM for the old versus 75mb for the new) and in my case I'm finding that other processes are being affected.

You might want to watch your server closely after you've installed the agent, especially if you're using Windows SBS 2003 (very memory hungry!)

I'm hoping that by the time the AIDS project is ported over to the BOINC client, the memory requirements may have been reduced.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the UD Client will only use one processor anyway at the moment.

Re: Spare cycles

Try BOINC for Windows instead. It will use both CPUs, plus it will run as a service rather then a user-mode app, so it will run without a user logged in.
