2024-06-17 Discussion of flags for country statistics

Hello all,

Some of our volunteers from China pointed out in this thread that the Chinese flag appears to be incorrect on our country statistics page. Upon closer examination, several other countries' flags have a skewed appearance on the country statistics (see, for example, Canada's statistics). The images were originally a GIF representing a flag moving in the wind, but in many cases this has not translated well to a static image.

We will be replacing the image of the Chinese flag, but would also like to ask volunteers from other countries to share their opinions in this thread: Would you like the images of flags to remain as they are now, or would you prefer that we change them to standard images of each country's flag?

Thanks,
WCG Team

On behalf of the UK, it’s obvious that it’s meant to be blowing in the wind, it’s obvious that it’s the Union Flag, no problem.

If you’re changing them all to standard flags the yes, change it but there’s far more important calls on your time :-)

Re: 2024-06-17 Discussion of flags for country statistics

I looked at several of the countries' flag right now including my own USA one, and I'm not bothered one bit by the "blowing in the wind" images being used for most of them. The Chinese complaint must have been on the size of the stars or the red color or something.

I don't see the "flags issue" as bothersome one bit, so it's really up to WCG's time and priorities

Heck, upgrading the forum software to something secure and modern would be a bigger wish come true, but that wouldn't be nearly as easy as changing out flag images.

Re: 2024-06-17 Discussion of flags for country statistics

Considering the national flags, there are more important issues to be resolved[*1] on the WCG-website, but now that we're at it, I would like to state that the flags of Luxembourg and The Netherlands here on the WCG-website are showing the same colours[*2], while in reality the horizontal tricolours of red, white and blue stripes of both countries do vary to a small degree.[*3]

(*1) Personally, I would like to see the issue resolved, with priority, to add statistics pre-dating the official restart (see "Comprehensive Issue List & Report Thread (Feb. 24, 2023)"), regarding the Global Statistics: "we will be able to retroactively add statistics pre-dating the official restart over time."
To give an example, when I download file user.xml.gz from the external stats directory, my personal total credit shows as 324933880.807652 (at 2024-06-21 12:16 UTC) and my BOINC Manager shows 324,944,874 (at 2024-06-21 22:22 UTC). However, the Global Statistics are showing only 2,167,773,845 points for me at the moment, as I write this, that's 309681977 credit. (I know it's Friday, so the numbers will have changed a bit at the beginning of next week, but not by that much.)
So, in points, currently I should have (according to my BOINC Manager) 324944874 * 7 = 2274614118 points, but the Global Statistics are showing only 2,167,773,845 points, a difference of 106840273 points, which means that more than 100 million points are missing! devilish I cannot say how much CPU time or how many results are missing …

(*2) To compare,
- The flag of Luxembourg on WCG's website:

- The flag of The Netherlands on WCG's website:

(*3) Both tricolour flags are almost identical to each other. There is a difference, however: the light blue and the red stripe in the flag of Luxembourg are a lighter shade than the Dutch flag: the colours of the flag of The Netherlands are, from top to bottom, red (officially described as a "bright vermilion"), white (silver), and blue ("cobalt blue").

- The flag of Luxembourg on Wikipedia:

- The flag of The Netherlands on Wikipedia:

At the latest when WCG started to censor me last year it was clear that all those stats from May'22 through Sep 28th'22 would be lost, as that was the result of me calling out Cyclops for repeatedly lying about this issue. That data was never properly retained, otherwise, there would have been plenty of time to at least make first steps in trying to restore those results and corresponding credits.

I didn't care much about the amount of points, but I know that I lost about 5 years worth of runtime in that time frame. As that corresponds currently to about 3 calendar weeks of crunching for WCG, I rather take the loss of that work if we can expect to get a more reliable operation going forward....

loss of work is a horrible thing to experience. that's literally the only thing we have to show for our contribution.

Hi Adri,

Thanks for highlighting this issue with the flag for The Netherlands. I've forwarded this to the tech team.

If the team have time to spend on graphics, there's some new badges to be created that have been on the waiting list for a very, very long time.
