confused No longer updating runtime/results/points

I had an issue with the Boinc version and Linux. I changed versions of Boinc and resumed crunching but nothing gets updated. I can see my tasks working, get completed and uploaded. I used the same account but something got reset?

Re: No longer updating runtime/results/points

If you load this URL in your browser, do you see your device? If not, please see this thread.

# To find the numerical ID "DEVICE_ID" of your device:
# You can find the DEVICE_ID in the file "sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml" in the BOINC-directory ~boinc on the designated device by inspecting the contents of the element <hostid> in that file.
# (Similarly, the DEVICE_ID can also be found, per PROJECT (i.e. underneath each element <project>), in the file "client_state.xml" (and possibly in the file "client_state_prev.xml") in the BOINC-directory.)
# You could also find the DEVICE_ID in the file /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog where it says ”[World Community Grid] URL http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID *******; resource share ***”.
# On Android, after starting the BOINC Manager, you can find the DEVICE_ID where it says ”URL http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID *******; resource share ***”.
# Else, in BOINC Manager, in the Projects tab, after selecting World Community Grid and then clicking Properties, you'll also find the Computer ID (= DEVICE_ID).

Re: No longer updating runtime/results/points

Thanks for the reply. I made some changes as I was on Ubuntu 20.04 where WCG worked, upgraded to 22.04 where it didn't, back to 20.04 then gave up. Finally got Mint to play nice with 22.04. All of this is on the same computer and my single account. My WU/points appear to be working/updating now but severely lagging. May need time to catch up. There are 3 devices listed. I see an easy route to ADD a device but not remove. 1 of the 3 devices is another computer I may use from time to time. Looks like what I need now is how to remove the initial device named the same, a duplicate as its the same computer? If its a hassle and the WU's are valid, I can just leave everything as is as it appears to be slowly correcting itself.

Re: No longer updating runtime/results/points

I'm afraid there is no way to delete or to merge devices and this has been the case all along on WCG.

See e.g. this post from 2012 by knreed, one of the IBM techs at the time:
We recognize that some people would really like this feature and we have added it to our 'to-do' list. However, our 'to-do' list is very long and we have to prioritize where we spend our time. In this case, this item, while desired by some volunteers, is a nice to have feature vs something that inhibits volunteers from getting research done or a feature that advances the research that is being run at World Community Grid. As an example, we are currently changing Say No to Schistosoma, Global Online Fight Against Malaria and Drug Search for Leishmaniasis to run with reduced redundancy so that more workunits can be completed. We are also close to resolving the issue that is making Computing for Sustainable Water run slow on Windows XP (and our findings with this issue may result in the project running faster on all computers). Please understand that we are not dismissing your request - but we do not have unlimited resources.
… this one from 2008 by Lawrence in post 153162:
The number of devices that you have ever registered always increases. It is not the same as the number of current working devices which are displayed in My Grid - Device Manager. People often ask for this to be changed. Perhaps someday it will be changed.
and this one by Lawrence from 2006 in post 59239:
There is no way to decrease your devices. A device is really an installation, rather than a computer. Every time you install the software, a unique ID is created for that client, which the server always remembers, ready to accept a message from that ID (device). Later this year, we intend to revamp that section of the code, but we shall just have to wait to see what replaces it.

I have been following some posts on other BOINC projects where they did allow the database to merge devices. This sort of massive reorganization of the database slowed their servers to a crawl, so they had to disable the feature. Then they discovered that errors were introduced into their databases during the reorganization. I have been thinking about database design issues and this problem. My own preferred solution is the introduction of a whole new level that leaves the low level devices alone but lets the user map them to computers (or some similar entity name). Complicated, but it avoids many tricky points. But it would be programming intensive to give the user access to edit the computer list to the user's satisfaction.

Also, in the Help pages:
Can devices listed on my Device Manager page be deleted or merged?
Devices listed on your Device Manager page cannot be deleted or merged at this time.

This is almost scary. I did the same with 3 machines and had no problems. When I updated 20.04 to 22.04.2 LTS it even updated Boinc to 17.18.1. It surprised me.

This is one of the reasons I turned off updates. They are WCG only. I don't need those headaches.
It works as is now so why "fix" it.

Edited:
To be more specific I used Xubuntu with the Xfce GUI.

Re: No longer updating runtime/results/points

Thanks guys for the details. It seems to be working ok but big delay. The device manager here only shows 1 device active and that's true, just lost some time there but that's ok as I'm not here for the points. Having been involved in several projects based mostly on grants, the WCG response is accurate. Limited time and resources explains a lot of things. Would like to see some research high points above what has been announced from crunching everywhere. For those involved in DC from the beginning like I was, results have been weak and the DC community has been shrinking for a long long time. There's a great paper from UC-Berkely icon about it. Would like to be more excited about crunching than I am but was happy to just find a project I thought worthwhile.
