OPN using hardly no GPU on Mac

Hi

I've been crunching OPN for a long time (when there are) on my late 2020 Intel iMac with a usable GPU (AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT Compute Engine (16368MB) OpenCL: 1.2). I do remember I had setup my boinc to run 4 tasks in parallel (they were using average 20% of the GPU each) so it would be used at 80/90% all the time.

Today I got a batch in the afternoon : I realize they have (all) been using hardly no GPU power, the 4 of them together take less than 20% of the GPU.

They take from 10 to 20mn to complete, all are ending in valid status.

Any idea why this strange (+ a bit useless) behaviour ? what can they actually be crunching ?

Hello,

It seems like you’re experiencing an issue where your OPN tasks are not utilizing the full potential of your GPU. This could be due to a variety of reasons, such as changes in the application’s code, updates to your operating system, or even the specific tasks being processed.

Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

Check Activity Monitor: Use the Activity Monitor on your Mac to view the GPU activity. You can access it by going to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, then selecting Window > GPU History.

Update Drivers and OS: Ensure that your Mac’s operating system and GPU drivers are up to date. Sometimes, performance issues can be resolved with an update.

Review BOINC Preferences: Check your BOINC preferences to make sure that they are set to utilize the GPU effectively. It’s possible that a recent update or change in settings has affected how BOINC uses your GPU.

BOINC Project Settings: Some BOINC projects allow you to set preferences on their website. Log in to your project account and review your settings to ensure they are optimized for GPU usage.

I hope the information may helps you.

Re: OPN using hardly no GPU on Mac

Double-check your BOINC client settings. BOINC might be prioritizing CPU tasks due to project configuration or your client settings. OPN projects might evolve their workloads over time. A simple restart of the BOINC client can sometimes resolve temporary glitches that might be affecting GPU utilization. If a restart doesn't help, consider updating the BOINC client to the latest version. While less likely, ensure your Mac's GPU temperature is within normal operating range. Updating your Mac's AMD Radeon Pro drivers to the latest version might address any compatibility issues or performance optimizations related to BOINC. Kynect
