Using web-based preferences from climateprediction.net: Did I set and forget this?

Several years ago, I set up BOINC on a Windows 10 PC that only occasionally comes to visit me. On a recent visit, I noticed that the machine is running slower than desired, and I wondered if I could dial back the WCG activity using the Computing Preferences menu. This seems to be set to using web preferences from https://climateprediction.net/. I think I recall setting it to using web preferences, with a view to enabling remote management, but have no memory of any association with climateprediction.net. How can I change the settings?

The device _seems_ to be present in WCG "viewDevices.do" page, and seems to be using a "device profile" called "school". This management menu suggests that device profile "school" uses "Standard Settings". How may I discover what these settings are?

If I use the radio button to select "Custom Profile" will it show me what the current settings are for "school", and allow me to change and save them?

Will those changes apply to the "school" profile and be propagated to all other devices that use the "school" profile?

Where does "climateprediction.net" fit into this process? Do I need to create an account on this website to manage my device profiles? Did I snooze through the consultation process before this change came about? I imagine there might be some benefit in asking this on the BOINC message boards, but perhaps someone here can offer some insight?

Re: Using web-based preferences from climateprediction.net: Did I set and forget this?

https://climateprediction.net/ is a totally separate project. It has nothing to do with World Community Grid. You should be able to just remove this project by looking at the projects tab on the BOINC dashboard. I do not use this project, but understand their work units are several months in length.
If you are using the "school" device profile, by using the "custom " profile you can set your preferences by scrolling down the page and selecting the appropriate boxes.
If the system is running slower than desired, that may be due to any number of factors of which BOINC may be only one of many. You may want to look at all the specifications of your hardware, your operating system and any other applications you may have running.
Feel free to post again if you are having problems.
Good luck and let us know how you do.
Cheers

Changing device profile "school" will change all those machines set to profile "school" but only those machines logged in under the one ID.

Re: Using web-based preferences from climateprediction.net: Did I set and forget this?

I have BOINC set to use Local Preferences only, but note that it lists Denis (a Backup Project I use when WCG is down) in the Web Prefs under <Options><Computing Preferences>

I only have Denis set as a Backup Project on a couple machines, but that selection has propagated to (16) other machines which is wild.

If I read the below link correctly (written back in the days of SETI), if you just go into WCG's Device Profiles and update it, it *should* eventually show in your Client.

https://boinc.n-helix.com/forum_thread.php?id=13461

If you're troubleshooting performance issues, it might be helpful to also use Local Preferences for awhile and fiddle with the settings to find an optimal balance.

Hope this helps...

Re: Using web-based preferences from climateprediction.net: Did I set and forget this?

20231009

OK, this is a bit awkward. Thanks for the responses. This issue seems to manifest in the BOINC Manager rather than the client, so perhaps I am in the wrong neighbourhood. Going to try a slightly different tack*

So - Picture The Scene: My PC has O/S Devuan Linux Chimaera, with a kernel in the 6.1 series. BOINC client version is reported in the Boinc Manager log as 7.16.16 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu. Boinc Manager is installed and has an "About" which reports 7.16.16 (x64) wxWidgets version 3.0.5. Both are the distro-supplied versions.

In Boinc Manager Advanced View, from the dropdown menu I can select Options / Computing Preferences. This reports to me:

Using local preferences.
Click "Use web prefs" to use web-based preferences from https://climateprediction.net

There is a helpful button labelled "Use web prefs"

This is quite interesting because I have no memory of ever having anything to do with https://climateprediction.net. I can report that there is no mention of it among the projects selected in my Projects tab. I don't understand how it seems to be the only option for using web prefs.

Now, my questions:

1) Has anyone else noticed that the option for using web prefs is currently (or was in the past) limited to preferences retrieved from "https://climateprediction.net" ?

2) Could others please report what Boinc Manager asserts about where their web-based preferences would be retrieved from, should they click on the helpful "Use web prefs" button.

Thanks again.

I am guessing I have some sort of communication problem, but as this is probably due to personal dimmness, it's quite difficult to debug using the brain with the dimmness problem. I will try to simplify my question by reducing the the number of questions, and asking them about my personal PC, which is readily available for debugging. If I can gain a better understanding of the issue (doubtful, but I have to try) I perhaps I can switch the context back to the computer I originally asked about, the Windows 10 one that only visits me occasionally.

1) No. The web preferences on my BOINC manager go to: http://:www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

I do not see any web preferences for my backup project.

I do not know how this option is populated.
