Hi,
Today i wanted to set my country on my profile and get this message : "Member Name contains invalid characters. Please try again." I have a dot in my member name, is it forbidden or is it a website bug ? TIA Emmanuel. |

Hi E.Jaeckert,
There are a lot of members with a . or a @. I suspect this is a new bug. Just wait till somebody on the staff looks at it. mycrofth |

Emmanuel,
I got the following feedback from World Community Grid technician, knreed: Previously we had allowed any characters to be put into member names which causes some problems. With the Linux release we added validation for A-Za-z0-9 and space, underscore and dash. However, that was probably a bit too restrictive. We have added . and @ into the build that will be released for the aids release. So, it looks like you will be able to assign your country in your profile beginning Monday. Thanks for your patience. Best regards, |

My member name is simple enough so it has no problem.
----------------------------------------What about those existing members out there that contain one of these? ---> ' or some other special characters not mentioned? Are the new rules only for linux members only? New members of any kind? Any members of the new kind? Any members of any kind? New members of the new kind?

knreed says that the name validation was changed with the Linux launch. When the HIV project launches Monday, he will change it to accept alphanumeric, space, - , _ , @ , and . (dot) I am uncertain just where names are validated but I suspect that signing on to anything but the forum will require validation. So is it possible to change a member name in My Profile if the member name is invalid?

The new validation rules will apply if you register on the website or if you attempt to update your profile at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProfile.do
It applies to all users. However, if you already have additional special characters you will continue to be able to use them. |

Previously we had allowed any characters to be put into member names which causes some problems. With the Linux release we added validation for A-Za-z0-9 and space, underscore and dash. However, that was probably a bit too restrictive. We have added . and @ into the build that will be released for the aids release. Is there going to be a new Windows Client then? You have probably seen hints here and there that we are launching something new. For those of you who have configured your Windows agent in any unusual way (e.g. running as a service, pre-logon screen saver, scheduled task, udmon, or some other not officially supported way), please keep an eye on your agent's behavior this weekend to make sure it continues to function properly. Depending on any of many possible Windows, Firewall, and other settings, you might get pop-ups, paused agents, or agents that keep rapidly and repeatedly going back to the server trying to download new work, but failing in some way. Hopefully your agents won't have any problems. However if they do, you may need to run them in the foreground until they start operating correctly. If not, please check the relevant window and firewall settings. Otherwise, reinstalling them should usually work. Thanks for your patience and contribution!! Oh, answered my own question.... ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 18, 2005 9:07:53 PM] |
