What is WCG's exact position on use of logo by members?

As a new team I would like to make sure that we are not running afoul of the people in charge by using some of the artwork in our banners.

Is it considered taboo for us to incorporate the WCG logo in team banners?

It seems to me doing so can only further the cause but if we are not allowed to do so we need to make some changes to our team items that we are using.

Please advise. :)

The use of the World Community Grid logo is presently not allowed, however, in the thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=4468, the project manager (bbover3) has indicated that the use is being considered.

Best regards,

Thanks for the response.

So should I have the banner altered or wait for word on the outcome?

This is a long-standing issue. See:

My suggestion is that you adopt a globe as an unofficial icon signifying the World Community Grid. Legal matters are normally processed at a snail's pace.

I think it's better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission! laughing

Would a globe cast dispersons on the oblate spheroid that is actually the Earth? Is the alternative "globe" in somebody's copyrighted clip art collection? That's just as enforceable as WCG's logo. Will the U.S. Naval Observatory gripe if the globe has latitude and longitude lines on it? Is BBT allowed to use that (Hummer?) pictured in their sig? Is a snail a reserved trademark for the U.S. Postal Service? A "snail's pace" would be libelous if you expected a "speedy trial".

In other words, if lawyers are getting involved, I'm not sure how much I would actually pursue this. I'd rather stay off of their radar (Remuneration After Defendant At Risk, with apologies to Radio Detection And Ranging).

If I were to link to WCG, I would only use text myself, a visual speech recognition mnemonic that I believe to be in the public domain.

WCG is under here somewhere.
