angry dialup and the client

Having been a several year veteran of similer client I was amazed when after starting processing this client seems to want to get an additional meg of data about every 10 mins. Being o a dialup makes this not only rediculous.... but downright non funtional.... When the agent is gtting from its server.. it takes all the bandwidth and Im left all aback.

Any Idea;s?

Please don't give up on us so quickly

Have you got McAffee Parental controls running? Are you sure your PC normally runs reliably with sufficient cooling

This has caused similar problems in the past.

Also the first download is ~5Mb as the Rosetta aplication is downloaded to run within the agent. Subsequent downloads should be around the 1 meg mark and on typical PC should run for around 10 hours

Re: dialup and the client

Hello zilakila,
David Autumns is right. You should finish a 1 MB work unit about once every 10 hours. So something has gone wrong. Try watching the Agent for a few minutes until it tries to download again. Is there any message on the bottom of your Agent explaining why?

If there is an error, it may be downloading a 4 MB copy of Rosetta, trying to repair the problem.

If this continues, uninstall the Agent and try running diagnostic tests on your computer, such as those listed in the 'Useful Utilities' thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490

Re: dialup and the client

Looking at your stats, they show no finished work units, so it is very likely that they are failing on your system. The diagnostic actions recommended by mycrofth are the best place to start.

tongue Re: dialup and the client

Hi

Thanks for the advice.... I will run the varied diagnostic's... But i expect the problem lies with a very bad dialup isp.... P PPC is pretty bad and most times I lucky to stay on over 10 mins at a time.... Could well be forcing the client to retrain.... to fix a dl error.

I recently moved here..... dsl diddnt follow... to far from the office they say...... Broadband internet via cable in 2 or 3 weeks... then this will be a snap.

I ran Hotcpu..... on this pc I get about 10% into the Complex matrix test and it reboots.... same in the memmory tests.... I do have a problem here Now I just have to figure ifs its really a hardware problem or a windows xp problem.

Seems to run ok on my other pc.... This pc is a p4 1.5 with 256megs of pc133 and the other is a p4 2.53 with 512 of ddr (pc 2700 I think).
Have to think about this for a bit.

Thanks

biggrin Re: dialup and the client

I think I have it all worked out now.

The diagnostic showed a certain weakness in my cooling system for this pc. But this wasnt a major issue as the client goes..... I watched the client pick up its inital loadout.... and it seems to have picked up just under 5 megs.... Im guessing that I had problems getting the whole download and the client wasnt recovering well.

Time will tell :)

This coluld be working OK. There is code in the agent that will abort after a period of time and send back whatever information it has at the time. This is done to make sure that what is termed as a non-convergent work unit does not keep on trying to calculate information that it cannot calculate.

If this happens on a number of WUs, you may have still have a problem. If it does, then the best thing to do is contact us via this link giving the device id of the WU (this can be found by opening the WU and clicking on the preferences - The Tick icon).

Re: dialup and the client

I suspect it is sending "Unrecoverable Error" messages. So many possibilities. Are you SURE that Memtest86 says that there are no memory problems on your computer?
