Migrating completed work.

I move from place to place. It's almost time for me to move. I have approximately 1200 completed tasks sitting on a computer that I will be turning off when I leave.
Can I just merge the files from the /var/lib/boinc/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org directory onto another computer?

Re: Migrating completed work.

Hi sydneykotic, when you say you 'move from place to place', does this mean that your computer will be moving with you?, if so, then just boot it up when you get to your new location - and hopefully, WCG will then be in a posiiton to receive your completed WU's.
If your move means that you'll be leaving your kit behind (say, you're moving from one employer to another), then I think (depending on when you move/when WCG start allowing WU's to send their data back), the data may be lost - as I don't think it's easily possible to transfer WU's from 1 machine to another. I think the software checks the compuer name/OIS etc. My suggestion (if it is this, latter scenario), woiuld be to try and leave it as long as you can - and hopefully, the completed work will get sent back before you have to shut down that computer.

Re: Migrating completed work.

Had a system that failed. Problem was fortunately not the disk drive. Just powered down another system having the same OS (linux) and BOINC version, and disabled boinc from starting using systemctl. Added the failed disk. Powered up and navigated to the boinc directory on the disk from the failed machine. Used boinccmd to start manually while in the failed disk's boinc directory, disabling fetching new work once running. No problems, completed all the WUs and vaiidated. Only thing lost was longer processing time as far as WCG was concerned.

Have also simply renamed linux machines, boinc didn't care. WCG stats web pages just updated showing the WUs in progress under the new name. No idea if Windows is this flexible.

You can simply take the whole BOINC data dir with you and use it on an other computer (if that computer isn't too different). At least on Windows it's pretty simple, simply install BOINC and point the installer to the copied dir as data dir. Not sure about Linux, but I guess it should work there somehow too, the way TonyEllis has described it.

Re: Migrating completed work.

Thanks for all the replies. I should have mentioned that I run openSUSE on all of my computers. In short, I will be shutting down 2 computers in about a week and a half. Operating under the assumption that the WCG site isn't fully functional at that time I've:
1. Gone in with boincmgr and suspended all activity.
2. Gone in using YaST and stopped the boinc-client service.
3. As root did a tar -czvf if the /var/lib/boinc/projects/www,worldcommunitygrid.org directory and moved those *.tgz files over onto the third machine which which will travel with me.
Should the WCG site start working I'll just delete the tgz files.

Would guess even under linux BOINC stores client_state.xml under the "root" /boinc/ directory. Since you can't upload anything without client_state.xml, would expect you'll need to backup everything in /var/lib/boinc/ + sub-directories.

For Windows users it's normally c:\programdata\boinc\ + sub-directories that needs to be backed up.

Re: Migrating completed work.

Thanks. I'll wait until just before I leave to do the tar, up one level, so the other projects get a chance to clear out all their work.
