Task Hanging at 51.760%

Hi all - I aborted a task yesterday with a running status and progress at 51.760%. It had been running for over 24 hours. Today I have another, same exact percent and run time of 1d 15:35 hours/minutes. Is this a known issue? I hate to waste some much run time on a task that likely will never finish.

Much appreciated!

Try doing a restart on the machine.

Re: Task Hanging at 51.760%

Thanks Sgt. Joe - I'll give it a try; I have completed ~100 MCM1 tasks during this time and nearly 100k task for this project over the years and never had them hang like this. I'll restart and post here if it helps. Btw, I have restarted between the two that hung so not too hopeful.

Thanks again

Re: Task Hanging at 51.760%

I have completed a little over 300,000 of them and never experienced this problem on either Windows or Linux.
How are your CPU temps ?
Cheers

Re: Task Hanging at 51.760%

I have suffer from this issue too. And it seems it also effect Open Pandemics too, which is why I post in the general forum.

https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,44886

After I aborted 4 work units, it seems the rest return to it senses - although I do restart the computer just to be safe.

But it seems the issue still persist-ish, I know from past record mapping tasks complete in around 1 hour 17 minutes, but today while not in the days like previous - seems like the tasks will take around 6 hours 30 minutes.

I haven't have this issue before which is why when the running ones has the time for completion dates in the 3 days and two days, the work that YET to run shows estimation time as 1 hour 17 minutes.

Re: Task Hanging at 51.760%

Another thought comes to mind. What OS are you using, how many tasks do you have running at the same time, and how much memory do you have ?
If you are short on memory for the number of tasks you have, that will cause the computer to churn as it will be using constantly using its swap space.
If you are using Windows, have a look at task manager to see your memory use. If on Linux use System monitor.
If you are maxing out your memory, try running fewer tasks to see where your sweet spot might be.
Cheers

Re: Task Hanging at 51.760%

I think I know the issue although I'm not sure what is going on...

Is World Community Grid throttle the work units so that the download, upload, no task / bandwidth issues can be solved first?

The work units is running ( instead of paused ) if it was minimized for a while - but uses only tiny percent of the CPU - in my case 1.2% per work units ( of 17) . Because of this time for completion / elapsed is now around 6 - 8 hours.

But if I click the Boinc and watch it, suddenly the cpu% for each work units shoots up from 1.2% to 5.8% - so now my cpu usage forall instead of 30-35% become 100%.

Did WCG done some changes yesterday but realized that they throttle too much ( 3 days ) to a point the work units will not be completed in time so they improve a bit so that from 3 days the work units will now take 6 - 8 hours.

Or is this a recent Win 11 thins? Background app can't use lots of CPU? ( although i own this PC for two months now and it seems this long running only started yesterday ).

Anyway this is my basic observation from monitoring Task Manager and Boinc.

If I minimize it after a while my CPU usage would go down to 30%, and if I view it then my CPU% will shoot to 100%.

But I do notice this new Boinc manager compared to the old one on my now defunct Win 7 PC. Back then each work units is its own process, but now all workunits is a child process under BOINC manager.

Hmmm... can anyone else with free time confirm this?

Re: Task Hanging at 51.760%

If this is a Windows 11 problem, somebody else should have reported it. I do not run Win 11, I do not know any of the settings, but is there a setting having to do with background tasks ?

Edit: If you google "windows 11 background task throttling" you will see several entries which may help you to resolve this problem.

Cheers

Re: Task Hanging at 51.760%

Check SETTINGS -> SYSTEM AND SLEEP:
Two areas:
1) I leave computer and monitor ALWAYS ON. (No sleeping)
2) ADVANCED POWER SETTING set for maximum performance.

Let me know how that works for you.

Re: Task Hanging at 51.760%

For point 2 this is a desktop so I checked and there is no such setting ( although there is some related settings).

For point 1 this PC I allowed it to sleep when appropriate. But I do use it most of the time (reading emails, watching movies, youtube, etc).

AS for Sgt Joe, thanks. Now that I read it I noticed the maximum and minimum cpu setting.

Also apparently some other boinc users did reported it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BOINC/comments/xz2g2..._much_longer_to_complete/

I wonder if lack of reporting due to some might not upgrade to 11 yet or normal users are install and forget ( like me that just checked out of curiosity once a week ) while power users set their PC for performance.

Now it's between 4 to 6 hours instead of the 1 hour 17 minutes. But I will let it slip for now even though it takes 6 time longer than it should. but at least not the 2 or 3 days like before.

But I will try to read more into Windows 11 cpu throttling and see if i want to set min cpu setting ( windows 11 setting not boinc setting).

Thanks for the tips to all.
