Is WCG constipated or starved?
Constipation? In the Forums there are inferences of http errors and the like holding up the dissemination of work units. Some have thought this is due to lack of infrastructure or software capacity. Starvation The science projects seem not to be sending WUs. Whether this is because of the constipaton mentioned above or because of their inability to process the diarrhea of data previously provided is unclear. The need for hope. Members are leaving. There is talk in the forums of the senescence of the organization and winding down. Of course there have been denials. Sgt Joe has called for an organized effort to provide information. I will call this Tincture of HOPE-IUM. (a so called pitch sheet) It would not require infrastructure or software. It would reqire an analysis by Krembil of the issues they see and an honest aapraisal of the fix and a time line shared with the membership. It would also require contacting the science projects to find out why they are not sending units. Do they have a timeline to process the backlog and what is it. Have they become distracted by science ("other wiggly molecules" in the case of HST). Have they been discouraged by Krembil's inability to desseminate the units and collect the results or any other issues. HOPE-IUM will not last forever but it might relieve the pain. I am looking to Krembil to organize and perhaps curate this effort. Perhaps in a separate thread under NEWS. Krembil needs to monitor this effort and pehaps encourage meaningful response from all the projects. IBM did a fair job of this. . |

I will keep with the Hope-ium. I really don't want Krembil to make the mistake of providing a timeline. They aren't good at it, they don't know the next problem around the corner. I want them to wait until they have the list of problems solved. They have already outlined the issues in many news posts - Good job WCG on upping the frequency of updates - could be better, but the improvement is noticed. If people can't deal with the beta stage of this project, then they should go to other projects until WCG announce they are out of beta and ready.
WCG should just keep plodding along improving things bit by bit, giving out informative posts along the way. Gathering a list of new or continuing issues from the "beta testers". No point doing all the timeline crap except as an internal guide, publishing it will not keep the upset people, it will just give the upset people more to point at and complain about. When WCG is ready, a big media push can happen and old returning members can come back (not all will), and new members can be recruited. It is a mistake to recruit new members at this time. |

In the Forums there are inferences of http errors and the like holding up the dissemination of work units. Just for an optimistic outlook, it appears they have solved the http error problem. The available work units (of which it appears are only MCM at the moment) have been flowing smoothly for a while now. I prefer the expression "encouraging suggestions" rather than "complaints." Cheers

Failure to Thrive is a diagnosis, not a complaint. Constipation and diarrhea are suggested as possible etiologies. Information is suggested as a possible tonic. It would not be costly to produce. But it would take cooperation and digging.
I am suprised that someone who is existing on hope-ium says it is bound to fail. The question remains: Is this a question of input or the ability to output? Could a new project be brought on board? It is not unreasonable to look to Krembil in its position of In loco parentis for a help in this matter. It is difficult to see what may have been a petaflop endeavor turn into one which could become a single flop. Information is being requested by the base. What is the capability at present? What can be done about it, including stagnation among the projects? What is the vision for the future? Will WCG offer a wide variety of projects similar to the past? What is the Hope for WCG. I think our parent should provide it. This is not a complaint it is a suggestion that has now beeen placed in the suggestion box. |

Constipation appears to have set in again. However it happened to IBM as well. See: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,35993_offset,20

One of the hallmarks of the World Community Grid is an interesting wide variety of scientific investigations using different modalities compatible with the structure of the grid and sanctioned by reputable institutions. There is one, (SCC) that appears to be available. One wonders why this is not being brought on board.
My initial diagnosis is - underlying constipation. There are some workload units which apparently clog the system – either because of size or makeup. There is some evidence that occasional members are hoarding these units by loading up their caches. Whether this exacerbates the problem or not is unclear. Does the inability to solve this blockage affect future plans? Many times, under duress, the “tyranny of the moment” inhibits planning. What are the plans to bring a new project on board? Does it require more equipment and/or personnel (without which it is unwise to proceed)? Are there any alternatives? What are the steps to proceed to a beta test for SCC? I would refer you to the earlier portions of this thread and bring up Hopium again. Maybe add some Informium. What are the plans and what will it take? Are we stuck? The questions remain the same. |

I would like to revive this thread.
It certainly seems that there has been no movement. This could be that there is a lack of funding at the researcher level. It may be time to defecate or vacate the crockery. It may be the inability to process and store to work. It may be the lack of interest in the institutions to do this kind of research. What is the role of WCG in the answer. The proposed solutions are still an answer. We need to be kept informed. |
