I just changed my computer - and the new machine doesn't have the same drive letters as the old one. So the help files told me to uninstall the software, then change the data drive to the new one during re-installation. Fine
Except that it won't install. Downloaded a new installation file, but when I run it about 85% of the way through the process it informs me it can't find the "World Community Grid.msi" file. The directory where it is supposed to be exists, but is empty. I would like to go back to running the project, but fixing the recent problems is becoming such a pain I am seriously considering forgetting it. Help appreciated! I am running Win 11 - latest version, on a 64-bit PC |

The only help I can give now is to search for that file in all drives if more than one.
----------------------------------------Open a command prompt Change to the root --> cd c:\ (or whatever) Then look for the file --> dir "World Community Grid.msi" /s What will this tell you? Where the .msi file is Now copy it to "The directory where it is supposed to be exists, but is empty.".... and what is that directory? Try the install again. I'm presuming the DOS box does not scare you. Not sure how I missed this post for 3 days. [Edit 2 times, last edit by BobbyB at Oct 11, 2022 7:37:23 PM] |

In the event that the .msi is NOT found:
Open that folder in File Explorer before the install and check it regularly during the install. |

However, if you've changed the computer as stated, this is a new install not a reinstall. You can't keep the same Device Name. Simply perform a new install.

You need to be clearer exactly what you have done.
----------------------------------------It sounds like you have an existing install but the data files were on a drive other than the standard boot drive which has now changed drive letter and you do not have the original install .msi file required to un-unstall when doing a re-install. It is possible to change BOINC to point to the changed drive letter. To re-install you need an msi matching the version installed. Paul.

Or, do it the easy way by using the search box in File Explorer, and install to the same place. The search in File Explorer takes forever. It searches the contents of files unless turn off in the advanced options. MS messed that up.With the command prompt you just search for file names. By playing around I found that you can just clone the BOINC directory to another computer without a problem but that's outside the scope of this thread.
