For those who may not have noticed, there is now a “Donate” option on the top right of the website.
----------------------------------------It’s clear that WCG needs more servers and/or bandwidth to handle the current and future demand, given the work-unit download problems. WCG is also no longer backed financially by IBM, so if you can send them a few bucks, please consider doing so, and being part of the solution. @WCG I strongly recommend you post on the “Donate” page your projected needs for the current and following year, and include a bar graph showing the donations received to date, along with the target. A minimal amount of transparency will go a long way here, and you may just find you receive the funding you need from this group of volunteers. Other projects that rely on volunteer funding do the same. Badges – I would add a special badge for those who have made a donation within the current calendar year. I.E. the badge is not permanent. A “sustaining” contributor membership could also be an option, which auto-renews for “n” amount every month. This will require adding a forum name or ID field to the Donate section. On badges, I have been in the casino industry for a long time now. You need to be very careful when making changes to the incentive system. The current badges/color schemes are a large step backwards in effectiveness in that regard. Although a low priority right now, I would at a minimum, revert to the prior color scheme for badges. I don't see Donate in the top right but in the hamburger menu on the top left.
----------------------------------------I'm sure I'm not the only one who might point this out but I already have donated. I'm not talking about processing power we all provide here and without which all else is irrelevant. I spent a lot putting together 3 rigs in order to crunch (Ryzen 9 and 5). I had none of this before WCG. I bet there are many here who have put in more $ than me. I'm not knocking or criticising the donate idea, I'm just saying. [edited] Let me 'splain this before all the hate mail arrives. If you run a benevolent organisation which distributes aid and food and shelter using an army of volunteers, the base you need to solicit for funds is not your army but others who are not part of the army. I recently contributed to World Central Kitchen but am not part of that army on the ground serving meals. [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobbyB at Oct 7, 2022 5:30:33 PM] |

I don't see Donate in the top right but in the hamburger menu on the top left. The mobile version would be at the bottom of the 3 lines menu. The option for the normal website is the top right. As far as the rest, whether to donate funds or not is up to the individual. I perform quite a bit of volunteer work, and it consists of both money and my boots on the ground. Personally, all my PC's/Workstations serve a useful purpose other than distributed computing. Have I built them a bit better with that in mind, absolutely. I'll bet the funds used to build a machine which serves no other purpose, would be better spent ensuring the program has a strong infrastructure. The onus however, is also on Jurisica Lab to be transparent on what they need to ensure that's the case. “Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. I think I see why there is no donate button. I never have my browsers at full screen. I'm now at 1294x768px and no button. It must kick kick in at 1300px. Just a little nudge and they show up.

It seems to me that any donations just go to finance UHN in general (like patient care) and not directly to support WCG. More transparency is required.

Further to Falconet's comment, there was a discussion about donations, and their status, back in January. See this thread and, in particular, Dr Jurisica's response to Mike Gibson's questions. |
