Download Issues, Redux (or why I gave up on BOINC last time)

I gave up on BOINC months ago because downloads were consistently failing, so I uninstalled (Win10). I just reinstalled about 20 min ago and the download failures are continuing. I exited BOINC and restarted and it downloaded a couple of small files OK, but never downloads anything of note, lots of transient HTTP errors like this:
01-Oct-22 15:47:26 | World Community Grid | Temporarily failed download of MCM1_0191333_8256_MCM1_0191333_8256.txt: transient HTTP error

Please. Fix. The. Issue.
My network is fine. My PC is fine.

This has been an ongoing problem for all users. It seems to improve in fits and starts and then deteriorates again. The problem is not on your end, it is a problem on Krembil's end.
Cheers

Same issue here, so I just spam the Retry Now button.
I will be DOS-banned eventually :)

Annoying issue, this is…

Re: Download Issues, Redux (or why I gave up on BOINC last time)

Until now I was very patient and understanding with all the troubles, well knowing that it is not as easy to take over such a complex platform.

However, the official "restart announcement" from 2022-10-01 increases a lot my frustration and and my disappointment.
The problem is not that the platform is not running well.
The problem is that contributor commitment is simply neglected.

I was business travelling during the last two weeks and unable to babysit the machines. Even with the support of Adri's scripts, several machines ran dry one week long because some creepy <1 KByte small files were not downloaded. In other words, I increase unnecessarily the electricity bill for absolute NOTHING.
I already reduced the number of machines and, in the meantime, I do really consider to retire the most of them just keeping the 2 which have anyway to run for other purpose.

Krembil !
You cannot be serious to make such restart announcements even the platform suffers under malfunction and very poor performance at multiple places.
Not solving the download problem within 8 weeks is a really poor performance.

The question is not that it is suppose to be new or that it is a prototype. The main question is that it ran over 15 years long without any significant troubles and in particular not at this level of disorder.

Your current behaviour is disrespectful for the volunteers spending hardware and electricity for supporting you and the projects.

Blame IBM a bit a lot also. They should have handed over a turn-key system. Instead they handed over a system with all the parts in a box.

Here's your brand new 2022 car. You just need to assemble it.

And I'm an IBM fan.

Hi,
yep, download isn't well working.

use the really dirty way and create a crontask with
"/usr/bin/boinccmd --network_available" every 10sec
(no need to run it as root)

or with windows :
"C:\Program Files\boinc\boinccmd" --network_available
The quotes are required because of the space between Program and Files.

Come on Krembil, sort this issue now. I am losing run time, bandwidth and patience with the download issues. As stated above, it works in fits and starts but to be sure it does not work consistently. I am tired of clicking retry like a maniac and getting nowhere

Re: Download Issues, Redux (or why I gave up on BOINC last time)

What is going on with this project?
Have all us voluntary user contributions become a last priority after the move?
This used to be my TOP project. I liked the feeling of knowing that i was helping cure childhood cancer or fight AIDS or find a cure for Covid-19.
But now after you moved, us standing here with our hands out, begging to be able to help, feels more like we are being mocked.
I´m so ready to abandon this project IF it is not becoming a serious project again and i know of a LOT of other users from BAM Stats who either have or are on the edge to leave this project too....

PLEASE!!! I´m begging you... GET IT TOGETHER before you louse all credibility.....

But +7 months (or 13, depending on how you look at it) is quite some time to assemble that box. When under IBM a couple of years ago, they switched from real iron to a (hybrid) cloud set up, WCG was down for 3-4 days. So setting this up in a (hybrid) cloud environment at Krembil should not take +7 months. After the shutdown end of February, the first announcements for a restart by them mentioned April. That would have been 6 weeks, which seemed kind of reasonable. But we are now the first week of October is almost over. That is an awful lot of time, time enough to assembler a rather big box...

And thus risking that a possible DDoS thread is being added to the heap of issues... :(
