In an effort to communicate humour more efficiently, professor Scott Fahlman of Carnegie Mellon University proposed a pictographic hierarchy to delineate attempts at jokes on the university’s online bulletin board (called a “bboard”).

In his post on September 19, 1982 at 11:44, he said: I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-)
