Re: 2022-08-08 update (new workunits, FAQ thread soon)

Thanks, I was able to get a few of the downloads to complete. Rest are still stuck in pending.

Also I received several GPU units from Open P. Some of the AMD units have completed OK. Only one Nvidia unit, it aborted in less than a minute with a computation error. This may be a card problem as I've not used the card for WCG before. Works for Milkey Way GPU units.

Re: 2022-08-08 update (new workunits, FAQ thread soon)

A follow-up to my previous post re Open P GPU task failing in less than a minute. About 6 GPU units have completed downloading. All failed within a minute of start. I've stopped requesting Nvidia GPU units for this system as I suspect it's a problem at my end.

I got a handful of OPNG WUs, also on NVidia GPU systems, one older 1050Ti, one 3660 (Dell OEM) and both returned WU just fine...

No, they are not going into the bin. The credits are visible on external stat sites like BoincStats, if you look for your computers there. It's just the WCG internal history that isn't updated yet. There are several other WCG pages that isn't updated yet, but afaik nothing is going into the bin.

This issue has been discussed a million times now since the partial restart of WCG.

Then you mussed have missed part of the discussion, Alter Schwede... wink

AGAIN, the problem is NOT the aggregated points/credits of all WCG projects together being relayed to those external stats!!!! That part somehow seems to be working (while it has an issue occasionally pre-transition).

The problem is the per user/per project stats are not being added twice daily as they used to before to the internal WCG stats on the "Overview" page.

That page does NOT acknowledge the reception of WUs since the shutdown on February 21st, 2022. Thus the "Overview" stats (Runtime, Results returned, Points earned) never change. Nor does the "Activity" heat map acknowledge any WUs received since the transition, which also means that most useless stat of "Current streak" has become meaningless (if it ever had a meaning before).

The "Activity over time" table is completely void of any information and the CSV file that you can download via the link on the right of that header has all accumulated stats, per day, ever since a user joined WCG, until including February 22nd, 2022. Not one entry beyond that. That is the first indication that all "rewards" of work done since the testing started in June 2022 have likely gone in the big eternal bit bucket.

The "My project contribution" section is still showing the per WCG project accumulated stats and badges (as ugly as they are) as per February 21st/22nd 2022. Not one of the numbers has changed since the shutdown on that day.

I don't do "Teams", so I can't comment really on the "My team history" section, though the "last updated" note seems to make it look current.

Now on the "Results" page, all received and returned WUs are showing up as if everything would be hunky dory. Well, until it isn't...

Just as it was before the transition (and actually, as it ever was), validated/verified WUs (either valid or any kind of error state) are being purged after a few days after that validation. That can be verified by downloading the current status as a CSV file (depending on the filters set!) with the link on the far right of that section header. This will get you a file with the generic name of "history.csv". I did a download of that during the night (around 3am PDT), when the bottom of that Results table showed 1040 total WUs.Right now, it shows only 1022, which means 18 WUs have been send on their way into the big blue yonder. Most likely, those are test WUs that had been returned before the "big weekend squirt". As I downloaded just now the current "history.txt", I should be able to find out exaclt which WUs these had been.

But in general, as those purged Result WU so far never been counted to the total, per-project stats on the Overview page, the only conclusion at this point is that all that work, at least as far as the "rewards" for those people crunching goes, is so far simply "for the bin". For me, this accounts since Thursday to at least 4 months of runtime. It didn't bother me when it happened with those few test WUs, if that helped to get the overall system up and running again, but...

So far, the only response from WCG/Krembil/Cyclops has been to acknowledge the download problems people experienced frequently, and that this can't be immediately fixed because of staffing issues in the datacenter. However...

It is extremely doubtful that the same guys MIA in the data center responsible to diagnose and fix networking issues, are the same guys that would/should be working on fixing the above mentioned database/website issues. And yet, not even a whisper about what Krembil intends to do to get those issues fixed. And that is what upsets me personally. sad

Once again we are back to the issue of communication, or should I say "the lack thereof."
My guess (and it is only a guess) is that this issue is so far down the priority list that the number needs to be expressed in exponential format. A sentence or two from Cyclops would go a long way to alleviate some of the anxiety some users feel on this issue. Being somewhat of a statistics junkie, I miss the numbers so I hope the issue gets resolved soon, or at least somebody with inside knowledge of the issue mentions it in a news update or in a forum post.
Cheers

I don't think that Cyclops knows the answers himself. And my guess is that he is primarily doing different work, unrelated to the WCG project, or at least to doing communication...

Re: 2022-08-08 update (new workunits, FAQ thread soon)

This is from Cyclops on the 19th. I think the main problem is that there isn't a new update that is dated every few days. People would know where the latest update was, and old issue threads could fade away on the forum.

"While we continue to work at a lower capacity, we have identified an additional path to increasing our capacity by additional 10-20% as we await the fix by co-locating select services on our QA and build servers. As we configure the system to handle peak loads and prepare to deploy the resources that are blocked by the networking issue at the data center, we will continue to update you. With this issue on a path to resolution, we should now be able to address some of the concerns over statistics, credit, streaks, and database dumps which we have already begun to investigate.

We will have a full article on the World Community Grid website soon discussing BOINC stats from our current testing phase and fixes to some of the known issues with the platform."

No, I have not missed anything, I know about the problem you're all talking about. It's just that at this stage of the restart of WCG, I do not find it important at all. I can follow my crunching (credits), on the external stat sites, and I'm fully content with that for now. In due time, the WCG team will fix the internal stats (history, teams, and whatever else). I'm not bothered at all with that problem for now.

Why people are so upset about those issues, when WCG isn't fully restarted yet, is beyond my understanding. Patience, patience.....
