This is hard to explan and maybe not, to have a client that fit a user that dont what to setup or have issue with it, it all start with use idle time then multi core that are not in use by a game.
----------------------------------------you might say soft crunching with what ever left over in cpu power. and it can backdown if other task use more resource, you might think not a gold in it self , but sense there are more gamer today with mullti core 8cpu+ even, and some game only use 2 or 4 cpu's or more its still alot power thats lost, and trust me on this gamers will not sit and do code and exceptions rules per game. this is last time i will suggest this, seem to missing alot of options in the client, and yes i know you can edit code and make such, gl explan this to casual gamer that dont want to have any issue with its setup other then okay i will help if i can. i can tell they dont want to fiddle with next game setup, point is so many gamers have more then 1000 of games even seen some have way more, and once 200 games was seen as alot , that time is over. point is as you see make exception rules for so many forget it. gl with it, most will uninstall your client then they see how bad it actual works on such terms. dont care if you even make a boinc game client as reference ( it should be seen as light client that dont drain at all while gameing if such is even possible. ) [Edit 1 times, last edit by Mantakno at Jul 18, 2022 8:19:18 AM] |

The boinc client is not developed by WCG they only use the client with own graphics.

The issue with games is latency and lag so cpu is not the only issue here. Many application use hardware differently but in general they slow down disk and use some of ram also. This could cause issues in game even if cpu is only at 50% and they would suspend boinc.
I have played a few games mostly first person shooter while running boinc on half of cpu and gpu suspended and it works but could cause random lag mostly when a task stop/start. There is several good options as it is in default manager but require people to changes to reduce or increase the work to fulfill there needs. For both gamers and people that have big computers with resources left over they could try using: <Use at most>20<% of the cpu> [low load on cpu and system overall but could cause issues like lag/frame drops] A setting to let boinc run when system is barely used like browsing or watch video it is probably better if user use setting: <suspend when non-BOINC CPU usage is above>30<%> [It will suspend most heavy games and also when resources is needed to other things] These 2 settings worked well for me and been there on client and all managers to boinc app. Start with low value to test it and increase it in small steps to point it create issues. But people tend to increase it to much and think and could work but they would probably experience some issues of random lag when more demanding task start/stop as disk spike in load or when ram usage get high. For those that do not have big cpu or slow/low amount of ram left over then just gaming it would be better to use: <suspend when computer is in use> [With following setting to set time 'in use' and add value in minutes] To allow boinc to run when system is not in use is the best experience for the users as it would not cause issues while using computer and gpu would run faster. This is also better in long run to allow it to run at night instead of daytime to reduce cost of electricity heat issues. When they coded the boinc-client devs do add low usage in settings and it is a good thing that these setting are set low/mid but many users tend to increase it and forget it until they they got big issues and suspend client instead to reduce it as it. To make client and manager more simple to use there is probably better way then just add more settings on top of what already is there. Maybe add in manage to have present setting with fixed values to parameters to manager and use Light/Mid/High in tray to switch faster while gaming. There is possibly better and more thing to change or add it could be changed in manager first instead of change code in client. If the default manager does not fit gamers you can use another boinc-manager but today most of them will use same calls to client but if you add code on top of it it could make setup more easy then default is today. Or you go to github for boinc-client as suggested above and create an issue with more deeply suggestions of what you want to change to current client or manager. If like a change you would help to get knowledge first how client works and what settings do today and be specific on target you would like to change to. It is easy to say to make client or manager 'better' but those who contribute to code would need more info of what to change. They need would need gamers thoughts and of what they would request to make it better. Some gamers could even have experience and contribute to code also. |
