A question I posed on Facebook has never been answered: One thing I don't understand: why was the live environment on IBM taken off line before the QA environment had been fully implemented and tested on Krembil? It all depends on how long the data migration takes and whether the hosting agreement with IBM finished before the new system was ready. The normal way to finish the testing in a situation like this is to parallel test, I.e. do a data migration and then run the two systems in parallel then compare the results making allowance for any deliberate changes in functionality. Any bugs identified would then be fixed and implementation would consist of a second data migration to the target system. However, if the data migration takes forever this might not be practical. What I suspect happened in this instance was that Krembil had an agreement for IBM to host the existing system until a fixed date, then ran into development overrun and missed the deadline but IBM would not extend the hosting agreement. If they were able to arrange it they would have two snapshots of the data, maybe a day apart, and could parallel test across that period before restarting but would be unable to provide a service from the end of the hosting agreement and the end of the testing.. |

Here is my wild ass guess:
They stated at one point that they were running out of time to do the transfer. This implies that there was a hard deadline on the IBM side to end their involvement in WCG. We also can guess that there have been issues in moving the QA tested environment to live production. None of this is important now though. They need to deal with today's issues and not deal with coulda woulda shoulda (as my mom would say) |
