Why are beta testers not being used if tasks are to be released "soon?" There are some talented and gifted members with experience available to help in this phase.

I'm sure they've heard our enthusiastic pleas to let us help. Everyone make sure you have your settings set to help when they are ready for our help.

There had been no activity in the Beta Test Support Forum since the announcement of the move last September. It is possible that none of the Krembil team are on the beta team! Hopefully, the forum administrator will see these posts.

I am just not sure if that kind of testing that Krembil supposedly is having to do fits within the "definition" of Beta Test as it was used as such for projects in the past.

I am just not sure if that kind of testing that Krembil supposedly is having to do fits within the "definition" of Beta Test as it was used as such for projects in the past. Quite right! -- In the context of this specific forum, Beta Test means "[potential] Project Beta Test" (which assumes that basic infrastructure is working!) whereas what Krembil folks are still doing is system testing!Ralf If, say, work is not reaching some "System Beta Test" clients, going to the trouble of setting up a Beta project (or even feeding an existing one somehow) so "Project Beta Test" clients can join in is likely to be counterproductive, especially bearing in mind that for some (many?) users "Beta Test" is effectively a set-and-forget option... Checking the Beta Test page, it does say for the projects...
That said, folks have volunteered (as Beta testers) to help test. Providing feedback is not a requirement although potentially helpful. The page does note WCG may contact testers for more info to help them troubleshoot though. |

But you cannot beta test a system until the system testing, volume testing and internal alpha testing are complete. The system has been migrated to the new host, it is now being tested on that new host and we know that that testing is very nearly complete - from what has been said system testing has finished for example. Can we please give the team a bit of room to complete the final round of internal proving without a dozen posts a day complaining that work is not being delivered and we cannot connect to the system - they know that, we know that and endlessly repeating it will not bring a working system any closer. OK, I accept that communication could be better, far better, but I’d rather the obviously very small team are heads down working than spending their time telling us what we already know - it’s not ready yet. I'm not disagreeing, I'm merely pointed out that folks that ARE beta testers did offer to help troubleshoot when WCG came back up to aide in bring WCG TO full production. I think there was a post from the team about potentially take advantage of them before the down time.
Whether they can actually do that at this point is the question that nobody knows the answer to except Krembil. Now granted weird things may happen if they open the system to beta testers. But pretty much every BOINC site has some warning as to the nature of beta testing, so if things go bonkers even if the testing is specifically not for a specific project (although we don't know if there is an issue with the projects themselves)... Fair point not wanting to give a timeframe, but once a week a little progress report... we're still ironing the bugs (that seems a good way to ruin a perfectly good iron), somebody spilled coffee on one of the servers, somebody kicked one of the servers (intentionally or accidentally), someone invented a shrink ray and shrunk the master server and while we found how to reverse it, we can't find the server yet... |
