Hello fellow crunchers,
----------------------------------------Now that World community grid is migrating from IBM would it make sense for World community grid to have a Patreon account? This would allow crunchers to contribute (other than compute cycles) to help maintain their operation. Thank you ![]() |

I think the way to donate would be via Krembil Institute: https://www.uhn.ca/Research/Research_Institut...ages/support_Krembil.aspx and directing the donation to World Community Grid by selecting "Other" and writing in WCG. We would need someone from the WCG team to confirm if this would get the funds to the right place.
----------------------------------------I don't know how *in need* the Grid is as well - so idk whether that's necessary. While the extra communication that a Patreon would ideally provide could be an improvement, any exclusive content/benefits would undermine the *Open Science* mission. Even just as a tip jar, a patreon would take a higher % of funds than giving directly and just applying credit card transaction fees. ![]() |

We do appreciate the concern and suggestions.
Indeed, WCG operation does require some funding for the core staff and infrastructure. Volunteers do provide enormous computing power, which opens exciting possibilities - all free to the research community. We trust that we can find one or a few funding partners to ensure stability of this amazing resource. While we continue working on the technical transition, we are exploring multiple options to obtain long(er) term funding; to ensure WCG remains free to the researchers, and continues to support advances that benefit humanity. We will keep you informed about the progress. Thank you all |

Presumably you have a registered charity somewhere in the foreground or background?

Yes - UHN Foundation is a charitable organization - and it does support clinical and basic research at Krembil and other hospitals and institutes at UHN.
That is one of the means to support WCG operation. Igor |

Igor
Can you assure us that donations to UHN Foundation designated for WCG will only be used for that purpose? Mike |

Dear Mike - yes - that would be the case. Much appreciate this grass root effort. I am also told that we do have a US-based foundation - meaning that besides great support for WCG - it would provide beneficial tax implications - I will provide more details as I receive them.

It appears USA donors (at least for now) would need to follow the instructions available here to receive tax benefits: https://uhnfoundation.ca/who-we-are/american-friends-of-uhn/
----------------------------------------Dr. Igor, it would be great if someone could write out these instructions for Canadian and US crunchers, breaking down how to donate - and perhaps placing them under "About", or in the FAQs. Obviously, I'm sure there's quite a few more important things for you and Krembil to do - but charting a path on how to donate should be a net benefit for WCG, and create a more permanent solution than an answer in the forums would provide. Thank you for all your hard work at MCM and WCG, and engaging in this conversation personally. All the best- ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by yoerik at Jan 24, 2022 12:23:35 AM] |

Dear Yoerik and other volunteers.
Thank you for your nice words, suggestions and continued support. Indeed, ensuring technical transition and WCG migration from IBM finishes on time is the foremost priority. We had a few setbacks with covid and even snow storm (and power outage) - but getting back on track. We are working with the Foundation to make the process simpler; we will share the details once finalized. Sincerely Igor |
