Is it normal to receive Mapping Cancer Markers tasks but not OpenPandemics?

  • I have selected all projects, incl. OpenPandemics.
  • I have checked the Minimum requirements and these are higher for MCM, so if i'm receiving them i should also receive OpenPandemics.
  • According to the latest September update for both projects, the backlog is larger for OpenPandemics than MCM.

I'm not a BOINC/WCG expert.

Re: Is it normal to receive Mapping Cancer Markers tasks but not OpenPandemics?

Hi there,

CPU work for the OPN project was suspended just a couple of hours ago due to an issue. Only GPU work is available but there is so little of that most of the time, you just don't get any work units.

@mystiquewolf I have seen the same behavior (for months) when I select MCM and OPN1 together... I get mostly MCM WUs sprinkled with OPN1. I always assumed that it was the availability... more MCM WUs are available than OPN1. So to keep things even, every 2-3 days I go in and disable one or the other. It`s not a perfect solution, but it works.

This was the case even before the above-mentioned CPU suspension.
As i said, the backlog for the OpenPandemics should be larger.

So probably WCG maintainers should investigate what's going on here? For me personally it would be the best if i could set rations between projects, like 2:1 for OpenPandemics vs MCM, or if there are more projects for example 2:3:1. The logic would be you find what percent is each number of the sum of the numbers and that percentage of tasks is sent to me.

Re: Is it normal to receive Mapping Cancer Markers tasks but not OpenPandemics?

The MCM project priority is higher than the OPN priority. So it makes sense that you would receive more MCM than OPN considering you have both projects selected.
The OPN researchers are happy with the amount of work being processed because they need to analysed the data and not be overwhelmed with simply sorting the incoming data, etc.

A while back, WCG reduced the amount of concurrent work units being processed for the OPN project (used to be a million plus every day as opposed to the +500,000 done in recent months) and asked people to switch to the MCM and ARP projects. Despite this change, a lot of work is being done because GPUs are far more powerful than CPUs.

From a resource utilization point of view, you should run OPN on GPU and use your CPUs for MCM/ARP/HSTB.

Re: Is it normal to receive Mapping Cancer Markers tasks but not OpenPandemics?

I control the numbers being crunched of each project by setting my Project Limits in my profiles to 1 spare of each project and set app_config.xml on the same basis without the spare. I get exactly what I have asked for.

I have had to adjust these to allow for the suspension of OPN1.

Re: Is it normal to receive Mapping Cancer Markers tasks but not OpenPandemics?

Where there is a choice, it is much more efficient to run a project on GPUs rather than CPUs, in terms of computing resources and electricity consumption. WCG members with GPUs have enough computing power to handle all of the OpenPandemics work about 10 times over (at least), so WCG have asked members who are willing to do so to use their CPUs to crunch projects other than OPN1.
The CPU version of OPN1 is still being run for those members who can't or don't want to use a GPU but still want to contribute to the search for drugs to treat SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Re: Is it normal to receive Mapping Cancer Markers tasks but not OpenPandemics?

I use CPU only because i can control the percent usage, with GPU the laptop seems like it would burn hot. It's good that they still sent CPU units but i don't receive them.

I don't know who set the priorities for the projects, but i should be responsible for the priorities as a user. If i say i want to help both then i want round-robin based on my own proportion. Would be good if implemented that way.

Re: Is it normal to receive Mapping Cancer Markers tasks but not OpenPandemics?

The project priporities are set by WCG based on scientific, technical criteria, project load balancing, etc.

You can set on your device profile to limit the amount of work units that your devices receive per project. Say you have an 8-thread CPU, you can receive 3 MCM work units plus 5 OPN, 2 MCM and 6 OPN, etc.
