Hi, I have just acquired a second hand iMac 21.5" Quad core 3.8GHz Intel i3 processor with 8Gb of memory. I also run at home a 15" Mac Book Pro (late 2013) and a 27" iMac (2010) both of which are quad core Intel i7 processors. On the Mac Book Pro and the 27" iMac I can run 8 threads but on the 21.5 iMac I can only get 4 threads to run. Why??

You don't list the exact i3 model but I'm fairly certain there aren't any 8-thread i3 CPUs.

I only see that 21.5 iMacs with an i3 ran at 3.6 GHz. Specs. The i3 series is lower-end and it only has four threads (no hyperthreading). Intel specs.

Many thanks for your replies. Sorry, you are right 3.6 GHz it is. I'm just somewhat disappointed as my old 27" iMac has given faithfull 8 thread service for getting on for 80 CPU Years. I just find it hard that Intel / Apple would take a step backwards between 2010 and 2019.

It is not a step backward. There were i3 machines back then and i5 and i7. Now you can also get i9's. The choice is there.
