Does anyone know how long OPNG is expected to run? Would it be likely to run into 2022 or longer?
----------------------------------------It would be really useful to have some kind of indication from the project as we are considering what new hardware to buy/run. Thanks ![]() |

Short answer: There is no estimated end date for the project.
Long answer: It's impossible to estimate when this project will end. The only thing we know for certain is that SARS-CoV-2 is continuing to spread and mutate, at a faster rate than vaccines are being administered and faster than potential treatments are being discovered and tested. No one knows when (or how) the virus or the disease it causes will end. |

I mean, when you think about it you'd want it to complete as soon as possible as that would indicate a successful treatment approach was found... Given that there's limits on the number of work units being issued to keep pace with how fast the researchers can process them, it would seem like adding more GPUs would just leave them idle (though from your stats you seem to manage to grab quite a few work units...).
----------------------------------------I personally would focus on systems geared toward MCM which they've said has essentially unlimited work. So lots of cores and you wouldn't even need much RAM--1 GB per thread would be more than enough. I'm anxiously waiting for the release of the Zen 3-based Threadrippers from AMD for just this purpose, though you're probably using Epycs or Xeons. ![]() |

Thank you caitilarkin, knowing that there is no end date at this time is very useful to know.
----------------------------------------Thank you also Acibant for your reply; we use many different CPUs. I think a 100+ year badge for MCM could be a quick way to substantially increase the number of contributors on this project currently. ![]() |

Thanks for the very useful information. I'll order some new HW :-)

... it would seem like adding more GPUs would just leave them idle on my rig with two RTX3070 inside this is the case at 97% of the time anyway :-( |

Even a GTX 960 goes hungry a lot. The only time in recent memory that I saw it crunch continuously for 24 hours (based on my UPS load graph) was during that recent series of long-running units. Even then, it often got new work units at the last instant.
It'd be nice to see more GPU projects, but GPU programming is even trickier than garden-variety multithreaded code. |

Yep, my 1070 Ti is idle most of the time but my AMD GPU runs 24/7 most of the time.

If you have spare graphics capacity, why not try GRP4 on Einstein? My 1 GPU runs it without occupying any CPU.
