Re: How long does validation take

yep, its the points claimed I was querying, mine claimed 663.2 the other 601.8, so we both got 632.5 which is the average of the two. Just a mild curiousity.

Re: How long does validation take

What I am curious about is how much time some of those high end AMD CPUs take for an ARP. I see yours at 14hrs and the other guy's at 21hrs. On my semi-monster Ryzen it takes about 9-10hrs. If any are lurking on this thread let me know.

I have an AMD Ryzen 5950X but maybe you're looking for Epyc server CPU results? I'll just give my situation, regardless. The work units vary a bit but I usually see them take 12-13.5 hours. It can also be affected by how many you run apparently and based on advice on these forums I only have half the threads dedicated to WCG working on ARP. When I had all threads on ARP it truly did take longer and ran from 21-24 hours per unit. It also depends on if you're running simultaneous multithreading (SMT). I could turn it off and get the time down but then I'd process fewer work units overall per day.

Mine's an Intel core i5. Yes 14h is typical for ARP. MCM and OPN tend to take around 2 hrs each.

Re: How long does validation take

I am surprised at the times of the AMD Ryzen 5950X which is about 35% more powerful than mine which is a 3900X but the explanation of running ARP on half the possible threads (16) makes sense. I've allowed only 3 and have only observed it once doing 3 and that was now as I write this but I don't spend my time observing this machine.

Two ARP parallel are running between 11 and 13 hours on a Ryzen3950X-VM with CentOS8 and Hyperthreading.

Re: How long does validation take

To maximise your output, Hyperthreading is fine as long as you only use half your threads for ARP. Use the other half for OPN &/or MCM. This is almost regardless of what machine you are using.

To keep your machine listed as 'reliable' and so get priority units you need to minimse your cache of units of any type.

For best results install app_config.xml to control the numbers of each project that run and set your cache in profiles to have 1 spare of each project. They are all readily available except HST, which could be set in app_config as extras to your thread count and also in your cache.

My i7 3770 has 8 threads and app_config.xml is set to 4 ARP,3 MCM, 1 OPN & 2 HST. My cache settings are 5 ARP, 4 MCM, 2 OPN & 3 HST, but I don't get HST very often. Of the others each has 1 spare so I have a replacement waiting and that is replaced within a couple of minutes.

All 8 threads are operating 24/7.

Mike

Re: How long does validation take

Hi Mike. Is there any documentation about app_config.xml - where to find it, what to change etc ?

...

I've just returned another work unit and seems I must have got a different answer to the other party because it's gone out to a third!

Re: How long does validation take

You can find the official documentation here in the "project-level configuration" section of the page. In Windows the default installation folder would have it placed in C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org (note that ProgramData is hidden but can be shown by checking the box for "hidden items" in the View tab of File Explorer). You have to create the file using the format shown on the page. This can be done with Notepad and then renaming an app_config.txt to app_config.xml. To replicate Mike's settings, for instance:
<app_config>
<app>
<name>arp1</name>
<max_concurrent>4</max_concurrent>
</app>
<app>
<name>mcm1</name>
<max_concurrent>3</max_concurrent>
</app>
<app>
<name>opn1</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>
<app>
<name>hst1</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
</app>
</app_config>

Re: How long does validation take

Is there a reason to prioritise one project over another like 4 ARP and 2 MCM1 (or any other combination) instead of the default 1 APR and unlimited everything else in the default profile. I've upped to 3 ARP in a WCG profile to make up for 0 ARP in 2 others. As we see in the posts above it just takes longer for ARPs.

In Mike.Gibson's example above I understand it as 1 profile for each machine to get that harmony of allowed task running and those in cache.
