Tried to run this on an old GTX 650 Ti on Windows 10 Pro, but keeps getting an error.
Probably too old? But if i see the error message, since i do a lot of C++ and shader programming myself it looks like a fault i would cause in my first week of coding. I'm also unsure a 650 would cut it, though if its drivers support OpenCL 1.2 it should run. One possible troubleshooting approach might be to try installing Ubuntu + Nvidia drivers on an external drive and see if OPNG crashes there, too.
----------------------------------------Or, try one of the GPU benchmarking tools and see if it can run for a long while without crashing. Apparently, Nvidia doesn't have a GPU diagnostic tool (or if they do, it's not for public consumption). Blow out any dust. Choked-up heat sinks can make things run much too hot. If the GPU has fans, make sure they're working. Also, check your power supply. If it was marginal to begin with or has become weak over the years, it can cause all sorts of random crashes. Years ago, I didn't get around to replacing an old, crappy PSU when I upgraded my motherboard, naively thinking I had enough wattage to handle a Ryzen 7-1700/GTX 960 combo. It did, for normal use, but a month of GPUGRID and Rosetta@Home was't normal use. and the PSU inevitably popped. I replaced it with a Seasonic that has been rock-solid. Tearing down the dead unit, it was pretty clear to me from the chintzy heat sink that the wattage rating was pure fantasy. [Edit 1 times, last edit by spRocket at Aug 3, 2021 12:49:08 PM] |

@spRocket
Thanks for your suggestions but the system is stable, as it is normally running FAH 24/7 on this 650 (with a Seasonic 650W btw). But since about 2 weeks FAH is giving out WU's that are hard to process before the Timeout so i thougth maybe this oldie could better be used for OPNG. All my CPU's are running MCM and all my other GPU's are running FAH. It does support OpenCL 1.2 which i have used years ago in my beginnging years of shader/compute programming, so that should be ok. It also looks to crash right at the start, but no usefull error messages as far as i can see. (In my line of work a big no no letting programs crash like this but i'm held to very high standards so i probably should give them some slack on that) Maybe if i have the time i can see if it works with Ubuntu as it looks more software than hardware related. |

That does kind of point to software (or incompatibility). That'd be a shame if the 650 won't work, since OPNG's relative lack of work units puts the slower GPUs on an good footing vs. the monsters. I just wish that the machines I have with integrated GPUs were new enough... my 960 is the only thing I have that can crunch OPNG. |

The kitties have been crunching from paw to mouth since yesterday. Something appears to have slowed down a bit. No terribly long lapses with no kibbles, but not much extra in their bowl at any given time.

... since OPNG's relative lack of work units puts the slower GPUs on an good footing vs. the monsters. ... I can observe this very well, while running FAH on several PCs, one of them with a GTX970 inside, the other one with a GTX1650, and yet another one with a GTX980ti, and yet another one with 2 RTX3070. The latter one almost never has work. |

Ken Reed wrote this Info in Africa Rainfall Project: We are running OPN at the pace the researchers want. Around 80% of the work is being run on GPUs. . hm, this sounds interesting. Because I thought GPU tasks are sent out for Covid-19 project only. So Africa Rainfall project has GPU WUs, too? |

Hi erich56
ARP does not have GPU WUs. The comment from Kevin Reed about OPN was on an ARP thread where alternatives to ARP were being discussed. Cheers, Mark |

Hmmmmm. The bottom seems to have dropped out of the server this afternoon. Not a bit o' OPNG kibble for hours now. The kitties are ready and waiting.............
----------------------------------------Meowsigh. EDIT..... OK. I swear the server is playing games with the kitties. Not a thing for hours, and then whilst I was composing this post, they got 7 OPNG wu's. Go figger. [Edit 2 times, last edit by kittyman at Aug 10, 2021 1:10:13 AM] |
