Help

Good afternoon. I have seen that the project is firm, but the increase in new contributors has been small. We are all going to invite more people to the project, because it is really worth helping the scientists who have helped us so much. share the project with as many people as you can.

Re: Help

As there are only about 3-6 months left for the current target, I would hold off from a recruitment drive until we get confirmation that there will be further targets once we reach batch 50,000.

Techs, how about some confirmation, please?

Mike

Re: Help

Yes, at the same time...considering the amount of time that has been invested in developing the GPU side of tings I would suspect target 1 is only the first in a long row of targets.

But as you say Mike, some confirmation would be good.

Re: Help

Hello,
if someone is invited to covid project only, it would be good to know, how much work is left for covid project only.

On the other hand, there are many other good projects to choose from.

And, last, if we had much more contributions to covid project, it maybe would end only in two weeks already.

And this would be positive, woudn't it.

As far as I am concerned I will contribute as long as I can. If covid ends I go to immune projects.

Best
Martin

Re: Help

In any case, saying anyone should wait to try to recruit and get more help on a time-sensitive crisis like this one is not really logic. So what if the 6 months workunits get spent in 2 months instead, isn't that even better if one candidate turn out to be the one that will help save life?

Re: Help

I was really just trying to provoke the techs into giving some sort of idea how long opn might last.

Re: Help

I’m pretty sure that this project has plenty of WUs to crunch. There are already mutations of the virus being formed in the wild, which may need other/different treatments. Unfortunately, I don’ see this pandemic ending soon.

IIRC, they said every protein of the virus was a target. I seem to remember writing a post saying that there were around 30 proteins or something, so around 30 targets. Each target was said to have 50,000 batches.

I also recall the word "huge" being used to describe this project.
My guess is we've barely begun but we'll probably get more info once the GPU version launches, whenever that is.

Edit: From the launch post :

"This will allow us to target not only the whole viral proteome (i.e. every protein made by the virus) but also their interactions with the host proteins"

Re: Help

That is very helpful. But some proteins must be better targets than others, and hopefully they are targeting them first. I would like to see some progress reports from their lab tests, and when they might begin some field trials. By the time we go through all 1.5 million of them, a new virus will have emerged.

In the July 2020 update, they mentioned that they were, at the time, focusing on 3 different target proteins.

"In the initial phase of the project, we are focusing our effort against 3 protein targets of SARS-CoV-2: the papain-like proteases (PLpro, or nsp3), the main protease (Mpro, or nsp5) and the endoribonuclease (nsp15)."
