If you guys want to use your GPU for Covid...while waiting for WCG to get the GPU system up and running just run folding@home but pause the CPU work units (only run GPU). You can run that at the same time you run BOINC (It's what I do). ^^^^^^this. Doing what we can with what we've got is better that doing nothing. CPU on WCG and GPU on folding@home. If WCG is not serious about Covid, why try and force their hand? It wont help anything or anyone if they put out a half-baked project. |

Falconet has a point. Is your computer really that much more high security than Oak Ridge National Laboratory and IBM? What is it about giving users the option to begin GPUs early that would make you want to withdraw from secure CPU tasks? - Oak Ridge National Laboratory, unlike your home computer(s) are not directly connected to the open internet - and if they do, they have industry-grade firewalls before them, and proper access segregation systems - They will also have skilled system-admins maintaining & monitoring the system and network - also they don't keep personal data on their computers like family pictures or banking credentials Don't just assume if something is good enough for a controlled lab environment run by experts, it's also good enough to distribute to the public. (or vice-versa) |

Very well. But would I be wrong in thinking that Oak Ridge would also review the code? Or because of the security measures you mention, they could run potentially unsafe code?
----------------------------------------This is mostly a bureaucratic step that needs to be completed because WCG is run/sponsored by IBM and there are some big enterprises that need that review if we want them to keep running WCG. It's nothing new. Like I said before, I doubt there's anything serious with the software and the recent update and the need for "minor" improvements seem to suggest that is correct. But that's fine, let them review everything they need to. We haven't had any updates in January for any of the projecs but I guess it's possible the adjustments have been made and reviewed and Alpha/Beta is being worked on. But that is just speculation... Thankfully, there are vaccines rolling out, treatments are being worked on, etc. On the DC world, Rosetta@home has their nasal spray candidate against SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID Moonshot/Folding@home is about to choose their best molecule to take further ahead into what they hope are human clinical trials (March 2021 is when they'll choose the treatment candidate) People who are worried about security and also run other BOINC projects should keep in mind that most, if not all, other BOINC projects don't have a security review by an outsider. BOINC itself doesn't have any official security review by an outside party (over the years people have asked about the security of BOINC and the response has never been that there's a security review but rather that it's safe because of the way it works and also because there has never been any issue with it). I guess it will be done when it's done and we'll know either on the next monthly update or when the BETA test suddenly starts. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz [Edit 3 times, last edit by Falconet at Jan 30, 2021 1:58:53 PM] |

Sadly, even if there is this security review, there are still a lot of institutions, who want to have a secrurity level that for now does now allow to run WCG or any other grid computing application. Very regrettable, since those institutions have a lot of machines on their desks. |
