Still remember my father used one of the RISC Arcon for creating music scores. Was quite impressed with its performance those days. Also the graphical capabilities. Sibelius was way ahead of the game and the Finn brothers said they were only able to develop it because of the nature of the Archimedes coding system. I used it a lot and it knocked all the other music score software I saw into a cocked hat. |

I've scaled back a bit; I re-mothballed two old desktops that were running WCG due to the electric bill. I've also just retired two old ThinkPads (Core i7 L 640) in favor of Raspberry Pi 400s, which can crunch more work units with one-sixth of the ThinkPads' power consumption. Yes, a Pi 400 can crunch more with seven watts than the laptop can with 42 W. Do you have any advice on how/where to buy a Rasberry Pi 400 and how to set it up? I would like to replace some of my older computers with a similar setup just to save power. Any information/advice you can give would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Do you have any advice on how/where to buy a Rasberry Pi 400 and how to set it up? I would like to replace some of my older computers with a similar setup just to save power. I'm lucky enough to have a Micro Center within somewhat reasonable driving distance. They're good about having Raspberry Pi stuff in stock, but insist on in-person pickup. Otherwise, going to the "Buy Now" section at https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-400/ and filling in your appropriate keyboard/country preferences should get you pointers to retailers. To set one up, I image a card on a Linux system with the Lite version of
I also create an empty file called ssh to preconfigure SSH on first boot, and a wpa_supplicant.conf to preconfigure wireless (I'm in the US, set your country code appropriately!):
At some point, I'm going to set up net booting, but all of my Pis are currently running wireless, scattered around the house. Once I've booted it the first time, I log in and go through the usual raspi-config options, like setting my locale and the like. I then install BOINC with apt install boinc-client, set up my RPC access the usual way, and then join it to WCG. [Edit 2 times, last edit by spRocket at Jan 24, 2021 6:19:12 PM] |

This just rekindled my interest in the Pi. I had looked into it but dropped the idea as per this post:
----------------------------------------https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=645756 I had considered getting into a Pi 4 just for the experience. From what I realised, in another thread, the WUs processed does not seem like much so I ditched the idea. It did not seem worth the time and trouble. I have an old Lenovo T400 which does about what a Pi 4 does. It must be over 10 years old and worth 51 cents. The next post in the thread ( https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=645796 ) the person lists output of a Pi4 (~5000-7000 points/day) The person in this post says about the same thing: 5000-6000 points per day for each raspberry pi 4 https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=637598 This is the results of my old Lenovo T400. Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz [Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10] 2253 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 4413 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU Date Total Run Time Points Results 01/24/2021 0:001:11:57:52 6,178 10 01/23/2021 0:001:09:49:57 5,993 11 01/22/2021 0:001:22:17:16 7,975 14 01/21/2021 0:001:09:26:24 5,372 10 01/20/2021 0:002:12:15:15 10,289 17 01/19/2021 0:001:23:52:38 8,279 14 01/18/2021 0:002:08:20:41 9,321 16 01/17/2021 0:002:00:44:42 8,272 14 01/16/2021 0:001:14:36:14 6,641 11 01/15/2021 0:002:04:21:49 9,464 15 01/14/2021 0:001:11:32:44 5,920 10 01/13/2021 0:001:19:21:30 7,390 12 01/12/2021 0:001:23:08:01 7,988 14 01/11/2021 0:001:15:25:36 6,770 12 What do the results of your Pi 400 look like? Why a Pi 400 rather that a Pi 4? I presume because it is self contained in a keyboard. Let's set aside power consumption. Why do I use points as a measuring stick? Because it is the only stats I have. I presume points is directly related to the amount of work done and so the more the better and I presume this across all projects in WCG. So 7000 points in OPN is worth 7000 points of any other like ARP for instance. Is someone saying something different other than in today's context OPN is more crucial than ARP. It's still too early to pin down a RAC for my 400s, but I'm expecting something in the high-800s/low-900s. I'm currently seeing a RAC of 806 for a Pi 4B with active cooling and stock clock. My ThinkPad x201 Tablets were getting around 700 (edit: each).
----------------------------------------The nice thing about the 400 (aside from the keyboard) is that it has a hefty heat sink built-in. No need for a fan, and no noise whatsoever. That allowed them to bump up the stock clock speed from 1.5 GHz to 1.8. It'll crunch all day without breaking into a sweat. [Edit 1 times, last edit by spRocket at Jan 24, 2021 9:05:24 PM] |

----------------------------------------Not to encourage you to break your machine, but have you tried overclock to 2.2 (or maybe a little less)? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqZ99mGbSR0 gives details and claims no problem with heat. If you do try this, can you update your post? [Edit 1 times, last edit by mwroggenbuck at Jan 24, 2021 9:33:44 PM] |

Explain RAC in the high-800s/low-900s relative to what I see on this site like:
What is RAC? Date Total Run Time Points Results 01/24/2021 0:001:11:57:52 6,178 10 |

Not to encourage you to break your machine, but have you tried overclock to 2.2 (or maybe a little less)? Heh. I've been considering a bit of overclocking, at least on the 4 and 400. Jeff Geerling also reports that 2.2 GHz is attainable on the 400. The 4 with a fan running off 3.3V has plenty of margin for overclocking, especially if I switch it to run off 5V instead, and there are stick-on heat sinks on the SoC and other chips. |

It was an interesting feeling observing how this thread derailed from discussing Open Pandemics project to various hardware things related to Raspberry Pi :D
