Boinc is used for a very wide variety of projects, so your question is broad.
To increase users, there has to be a marketing campaign of sorts so people hear about it. And, users need to have a vested interest in the project they are running. This could be done by providing a cryptocurrency (or any other form of compensation) for work done, or by providing concrete evidence that the work they are doing is yielding positive results. Happy new year. |

Payment for work done is pretty much a non-starter given the financial basis of most projects.
More mainstream publicity would certainly help. What would be the chance of getting a major pc maker to pre-install boinc on their machines, maybe configured to run one core by default? |

Charities linked to the various projects could publicise it amongst their supporters.

Thanks for answering!
----------------------------------------Boinc is used for a very wide variety of projects, so your question is broad. If anyone has specific suggestions for WCG, this thread is the place too! To increase users, there has to be a marketing campaign of sorts so people hear about it. I agree and sometimes think about this. The main question that remains is who is gonna pay for it? Or perhaps who is going to make it happen, cause the money could be raised by some way (crowdfunding etc.). And, users need to have a vested interest in the project they are running. This could be done by providing a cryptocurrency (or any other form of compensation) for work done, That already exists, doesn't it? I think teams like Gridcoin were formed to provide this sort of benefit... or by providing concrete evidence that the work they are doing is yielding positive results. This is important and I think WCG last year made some progress toward this objective. |

What would be the chance of getting a major pc maker to pre-install boinc on their machines, maybe configured to run one core by default? Perhaps! If we spread this idea sufficiently until it is read by the "right people" I think this have a good chance to become a reality one day! Last year someone posted this in my team forum: "Computer ownership is on the decline thanks to smartphones and tablets": that's true! I hope we can see better BOINC versions for mobile devices in the near future. As I've already suggested elsewhere, I think it would be fantastic if one day BOINC software came already embedded in the most used operating systems and set to be used by the default. The user should be aware of it and capable of disabling it and making a general (or complete) customization (tweak resources usage, choose the projects to be run etc). Which hardware manufacturer would not be interested in an idea like this (that, of course, applies also for non-mobile devices)? I think about a simpler interface like the one the user sees when joining to "Science United" (https://scienceunited.org/su_join.php). Even a server operating system could came with this option (perhaps disabled by default)!" (Adding now: OR "maybe configured to run one core by default", as you've just said! |

Within the various projects I support Science United has to rank as one of the major causes of problems and confusion with new users. |

As an example, there are all sorts of charities worldwide for Cancer (mcm & scc) and climate (arp), medical (mip & opn) and anything else that might come along. Mike |

What would be the chance of getting a major pc maker to pre-install boinc on their machines, maybe configured to run one core by default? Sony pre-installed BOINC on their VAIO laptops back in 2010, not sure if it still does. I think some sort of lasting recognition or reward, be it a printable certificate, a 3d printable medallion, or name on a Roll of Honour at WCG HQ, could boost publicity, interest and motivation. ![]() |
