smile Agent cannot access server message

For those of you just starting, you may get a message that says the World CommunityGrid agent was not able to contact the server. This could be because you were not connected to the network when the agent last attempted to talk to the server. However, if you use a firewall product, this can also block access to the server. Try turning off the firewall and see if the agent can connect. If that solves the problem, then you need to configure your firewall to permit access to the World Community Grid server from the agnet. To do this for the Zone Labs Integrity Desktop firewall, do the following. First open the firewall program by double clicking on its icon. Then click on "firewall" at the left of the window and the "Zones" tab at the right. At the lower right click on "Add >>" and then "IP address". Fill in the box to say "Trusted" in the Zone field, "129.33.89.134" for the IP address field, and "World Community Grid" for the description field. Then click OK followed by Apply at the lower right. This should permit the agent to communicate properly..

Re: Agent cannot access server message

Hi, just installed the software, rebooted after that just in case and coming up with the same problem. Whether I keep Zonealarm running or not doesn't make any difference, although I marked the progarm as "trusted" in my ZA controls....

I'll just wait and see as well, but wanted to wave the flag together with the other posters in this thread...

Try turning off your firewall completely. Then minimize the agent screen and double click to bring it back up. I should try to connect again. If it doesn't work, look on the Preferences window (checkmark icon) and tell me your Device ID number and the exact time your agent tried to connect but failed.

Hi, tried as you suggested, but no luck at 19.39 h local time (few minutes before this post).
Device id is 2429, hope this helps?

Re: Agent cannot access server message

Check the amount of physical memory in your computer. For this project we specify a minimum of 128 MB. If you have less, the program is likely to cause way too much paging on your system. Thus, it won't download work for now, giving the generic (and we know sometimes confusing) cannot connect message. It will patiently wait for the next project, checking periodically, which may have a smaller memory footprint. Alternatively, you could add some memory to your system. Sorry.

Well, what a pity. Thanks very much for looking into this Victors. I actually do have 128 mb, but 32mb of that is taken up by the videocard. Hence the problem I suppose.

Sorry, thanks again, Ingy.

Re: Agent cannot access server message

I'm getting a similar error: "Unable to connect to the Grid server. Backing-off..." This happens whether I have ZoneAlarm running or completely stopped. If I minimize and then restore the program there is a little pop-up window which says the server may be offline or my internet connection may not be working. After I close this message, the agent downloads about 4 MB of data, begins to process the work unit (briefly), and then reverts to the "Unable to connect..." message.

Is the server currently having problems?

Re: Agent cannot access server message

I am having the same problems. See thread http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=182

What are your system specs? Maybe we can find something common? Did you run UD before this ? I did and it worked OK. Only change was uninstalling UD and installing the World Community Grid client.

Cheers, Peter.

Re: Agent cannot access server message

With only 60Mb real memory I suspect I am temporarily SOL..
Did not see such a caveat.. Perhaps I overlooked it..
I'll try to add to another PC..

In the meantime I am (a disappointed) Styx
