Does anyone know if all the crunching done in the WCG Covid-19 Project helped, influence, or even participate in the vaccine being developed by Pfizer, or even any other who are close.

Hi BobbyB,
OpenPandemics - COVID-19 is looking for potential treatments for COVID-19. It's not involved in any vaccine research. The latest project update includes news about the research team's progress. So far, they've identified 70 chemical compounds that show enough promise for lab research. They're now in the process of purchasing those compounds while continuing to send and receive work from World Community Grid volunteers. |

OK looked at those but understand that for us lay people "potential treatments" and "vaccine" are the same and after read some of those links I realise they are not really synonymous.

A treatment is a medicine you give someone after the infection, to cure the illness. A vaccine is something you receive before the infection. It trains the immune system, so that it can much better fight an infection, that might occur in the future.

And there are tons (or at least a few kilograms) of potential treatments out there, waiting in the wings for human trials.
So OPN won't be the first. But OPN may be able to target vulnerabilities in the virus that won't be susceptible to mutations. So we could make a valuable contribution for the next phase, whatever that is. |

We are also conducting research in advance of any future coronavirus - not just COVID-19. This is unlikely to be the last coronavirus - it is not the first one identified. SARS was just one.

I hope there is only 1 Coronavirus. I am definitely aware there is more than 1 strain.

This is at least the 3rd coronavirus. The first 2 were both SARS viruses and yes, there are more than one Covid There is a strain that has only affected mink in Danish farms and their farm workers, for example.

This is the third type that has jumped from animal to human in recent times. There are four other common types that have been around for a long time.
