Hi, hopefully someone can help me out here - as, despite having this particular Win 8.1 machine for a few years now, I've never come across this before...
----------------------------------------After my machine recently crashed (it never seems to last more than a dozen or so days, before the pagefile.sys starts going crazy, using up 100% of disc activity for very long periods), I rebooted it - only to find that, despite in the WCG agent (ver 7.14.2) all the WU's being set to run uninterrupted, showing as 'Running' and using the web based preferences - thus, they haven't changed recently, in the Windows Task Manager, there's hardly any CPU being used for crunching - and against each of the WCG tasks it's got 'Suspended' status against it. Since my computer crashed, I've rebooted it (apparently, cleanly) - and still the same happens, in the Task Manager | Details tab, it's showing 'Suspended', with only ~1 second of 'active' processing every minute - thus, the time it'd take to crunch 1 WU will be astronomical. I've stopped/restarted the WCG agent, stopped/killed/abended separate WU's, and fresh WU's kick in - again, dropping into this 'suspended' status cycle after starting. I haven't changed any settings, and this computer has been crunching away merrily practically ever since I bought it with no issues (over 5 years ago), thus, 'something happened' either when it crashed or restarted. There's plenty of spare memory (4.6GB in use out of the 8Gig available), the CPU is trickling along at ~18% and the disc actibity is negligable. I can certainly provide my computer specs if people think that coud be the issue - but, as it was averaging around (before tihs started happening), 3 CPU days/day, I don't think that'll be behind this situation. My bet, is software related, but unfortunately, I've never really been impressed with Win 8.1 - and I'm not keen on upgrading to Win 10, where Microsoft impose software upgrades on their timescales. Any clues anyone? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by gb009761 at Sep 28, 2020 1:48:53 AM] |

Have you thought about installing one of the more user friendly distros of Linux. Such as Ubuntu or Mint on that computer?

If you still want the look and feel of Windows but want to give Linux a try, there is a version called LinuxFX which looks like Windows. There is a Forbes article here and you can get the download here.
----------------------------------------I don't know what the problem on Win 8 might be, but this may be an alternative. Good luck. Cheers

Have you enable restore points in Windows? If so, you can just restore at a point before the crash.

Thanks everyone for your input - but, after letting my subconsious work on it I've now found the solution
----------------------------------------![]() As I suspected, it was software related and related to TThrottle - where (for whatever reason I don't know), the settings became corrupted/lost, and thus, as it didn't have a Tjunction temperature or a 'Set Core' figure, was throttling BOINC back to ridiculous proportions. So, thankfully, I'm now back up to full speed. ![]() |
