COVID-19 and MIP?

It would seem that microbiome research is a natural vehicle for explaining the different vulnerabilities that people have to COVID-19.

Is there enough data for this type of study yet?
Is it being considered?

Re: COVID-19 and MIP?

Hello!

Thanks for asking this important question!
Indeed, there is already some evidence that the microbiome may modulate the COVID-19 response and we and other research groups across the world are actively investigating this topic. Some early reports show evidence that patients hospitalized with COVID-19 do have an altered gut microbiome composition (e.g. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0016508520347016).

Before we can point out specific protein or pathways involved, we need to conduct more research. Hence, at this point our Microbiome Immunity Project work is proceeding as initially planned. If and when more gut microbiome - SARS-CoV-2 relationships emerge, we will re-evaluate what would be the best use of the computing power you kindly provide us with.

We are always happy to share our decisions and discoveries with you. Stay tuned!
