Just before my laptop finished 32 hours of crunching my African Rainfall Project work-unit, after years of using my BOINC client without any hitches, I get an Event that says "You've got two accounts, blah blah, try to remove them even though the 'Remove' button is grayed out, ha ha; blah blah."
And y'know, this is the first indication that something's going on. Not being told anything to the contrary, only that my account is screwed up, I figure that my software has become corrupted. That's not nice. So I waited until the work-unit was finished, maybe another 5 hours. When it was done, I checked "My Result Status" on your website, and it shows the download-to-return time was 32 hours, and I can honestly tell you the laptop was crunching for 99.99% of that time, which for a first generation i7-720, was worth about 700 points. The Status also says "Detached" -- finito, so it recognizes ZERO time spent crunching, i.e., the 32 hours were thrown out. That's not nice. So far, I found out that after uninstalling BOINC and reinstalling, the inactive Remove button became active for one of the "accounts," so I deleted one account. But I don't know if it uninstalled the correct account. Besides, the instructions said: 1) Remove both accounts. So I'm going to uninstall and reinstall again, and see if I can get the Remove button to become active again, so I can remove the 2nd account. (What's the deal with the instructions saying to Remove both accounts, but the button is grayed out so you can't follow the instructions?!?) Also, I got a problem with the instructions that I'm seeing on https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewDownloadAgain.action . Some of us have been updating BOINC for 20 years. Following your instructions, I find myself installing WCG instead of BOINC! In principal, I don't have a problem installing WCG, but I think the instructions should recognize that the name of the program we're installing today does Not have the same name as the one we've been using and updating for the last 20 years. You know, just for our sanity's sake, it would be nice to mention that there's going to be a change. Minor example: when I went to re-uninstall the app to see if I can get the 2nd account Removed, "BOINC" wasn't listed in my Program list, which was a bit confusing, and it wasn't until I sorted the list by Date that I saw the new program I'd just installed was not the usual BOINC. My Africa Rainfall contribution turned Bronze last week. When I downloaded my first Africa Rainfall work-unit a month or two ago, I was astounded that it was predicted to take 30 hours! Been through that with other projects I'd abandoned, because if anything goes wrong, that's potentially a lot of work that gets wasted. So then today, without any fault of my own operations, just the thing I feared about a 30 hour work-unit happened because of the way this "update" was handled on the other end. And I don't even know who I'm talking to. Is BOINC gone, and now the client is WCG? Because if this is a new client that WCG has taken on themselves, then OK if there's a clustermess the first time out. But if this is still the BOINC application, then the experienced computer guys over there could have done better: they should have recognized that the procedure they devised includes throwing out clients' valid work and therefore needs more work before it's released, and your instructions should recognize that experienced contributors have been using an app named "BOINC" since forever, and there should be a heads-up that if we follow your instructions, it will be something different starting today. |

Join the queue, many seem to have this happening today, the techs conspicuously absent in responding.

I think you have the same issue as described in this thread:

@Falconet and LavaFlow
----------------------------------------10-4 I would suggest that if you're serving thousands of people, then "customer service" should be included in the job description. [Edit 1 times, last edit by nei1 at Jun 30, 2020 6:21:14 PM] |

Are you using BAM? The Account Manager?

yes, Falcon. After decades of pulling my hair out, I finally got my BOINC account to work with BAM! a few months ago.
----------------------------------------I'm not aware of BAM! managing anything. I just used it to display graphs of how my minuscule work was falling behind everyone else. [Edit 1 times, last edit by nei1 at Jun 30, 2020 7:01:23 PM] |

Alright. It appears that this issue is caused by BAM and not something specific to WCG.
----------------------------------------Hopefully it will ago away soon. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz [Edit 1 times, last edit by Falconet at Jun 30, 2020 7:05:18 PM] |

That seems possible. Yes, hopefully. Still, this thing about the program changing name from BOINC to WCG. You can't go home again. Might be a red herring regarding this particular confusion, just bad timing for two unusual things to happen at once. Lower on my priorities are those projects that were not part of WCG, but did use BOINC. It suggests that the BOINC app will still need to exist for them. Perhaps WCG is taking steps to depart from BOINC? Or BOINC is cutting WCG loose? Que sera sera. These are the things that keep me awake at night. I have a chromebook that I never touch since the lid broke, it just sits there in the corner crunching Mapping Cancer Markers and OpenPandoras on Android, four work-units for four cores. I see it has no work-units cached for when these WUs finish, which is highly unusual. Lets see what the heck Events say... Last thing it said: Uploaded a work unit. Not getting any more WUs because the cache is full. No it wasn't. But I hit Update, and it downloaded two more WUs. Who knows w.t.h. |

The WCG version you are referring to is basically a WCG-themed BOINC version. It has existed for many years.
----------------------------------------Other than the theme, it's the same thing with an official IBM Security certification. You can use the Official BOINC or the Official WCG version of BOINC. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz [Edit 1 times, last edit by Falconet at Jun 30, 2020 7:48:24 PM] |

> WCG-themed BOINC version
Thank you, Falcon. I didn't know that / no one tells me anything. Also, that's one less thing to confuse me today. Thanks again. |
