WCG computing power Vs world #1

In the news Japan now has the fastest supercomputer working on Covid19. An article about it appeared on the BBC today - Japanese supercomputer, crowned world's fastest, is fighting coronavirus:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-53147684

Does anyone have an idea how much computing power does WCG have compared to this dedicated supercomputer? I'd be curious to know how a bunch of volunteers like us compare to a dedicated machine run by a national / government level type of organisation.

WCG is apparently 566 Tflops:

Fugaku is at least 400,000 Tflops:

542 seems low to me. I can count almost 100 Tflops just on Team Snurk. Of course, how one determines a Tflop makes a difference

Re: WCG computing power Vs world #1

I'd ignore BOINCstats for 2 reasons: 1) WCG in being GPDR compliant does not export data for people who are 'hidden' which I think is default for new members, 2) the credit system is fried across BOINC world. BOINCStats uses 200,000 credit for 1 Tflop, WCG uses 100,000 for 1 TFlop. For those reasons, starting with the WCG totals of points on the Community page, which includes hidden, my calculation is 1,691 Tflops per yesterday's results. Today we're heading for 1,712 TFlops.

The WCG method is explained here https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSearch.do?searchString=flops

Re: WCG computing power Vs world #1

Has the BOINC credit allocation changes since 2013 when this page was written: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Computation_credit. Seems weird that WCG linked to a page in the first paragraph that says 200,000 credit for 1 Tflop and then go on to say 100,000 credit per Tflop in the second paragraph.

Re: WCG computing power Vs world #1

WCG changed it to 200,000 (1,400,000 points) but then realized Credit New, which was supposed to double credit, in fact did hardly anything when implemented at WCG, so it was changed back to 100,000 (700,000 points).

Re: WCG computing power Vs world #1

Thanks for the explanation and organizational history! Great to know that we are collectively pumping out 3x the computations as shown on BoincStats.

Re: WCG computing power Vs world #1

my calculation is 1,691 Tflops per yesterday's results. Today we're heading for 1,712 TFlops.

That would rank WCG at around #281 in the top 500 according to this list

Meanwhile Folding@home is supposedly pumping out 470 PetaFlops - at the time that article was written, more than the top 7 supercomputers combined.
