My six varied-in-quality computers have been running WCG for many months but I have noticed quite obviously that my much older XEON powered 4-core 32 bit machine requires much more time to complete the tasks than the CPU Run time: Example: CPU Run time is 2.69 Hours and Elapsed time consumes at LEAST 200% more time. I just completed a pandemic task in which elapsed time exceeded CPU time by over 5 hours.
I have varied CPU usage between 100% and 75%, 4 or 3 threads; and have varied CPU load between 100% and 90% of the time. I cannot tell any obvious difference in total time required to complete the tasks. I also have a newer 64 bit Xeon and it and the other machines process all tasks within narrow parameters between CPU time and total processing time. Apparently I need a new machine. I am nearing 89 years of age and I surely do hope we can beat this COVID 19 threat before it comes my way and also threatens millions of other people around the world. |

The differential can be expressed in 'efficiency' which is CPU time divided by Elapsed time (the time the science app was allowed to run). Good numbers are above 90%, excellent numbers above over 98%, latter usually achieved only by devices that are exclusively crunching.
To find out about the big gap go to Tasks Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys), Processes and sort on CPU time. The WCG science processes are usually at top. If your machine is a 4 core, each WCG process should be using near or over 24%. Inspect if there's anything else using lots of time. If you don't see any, consider possibility of a virus or malware. Even cryptocoin crunchers seek their way in via web browsers. Let us know. |

I know on older Windows versions the indexing service would kick off once a day and run for hours sometime. It would push BOINC way down the dispatch queue. There used to be a problem with windows update where it would start and then run for days sometimes consuming a single thread exclusively.

Problem solved! And thanks to Master Cruncher.
I opened Task Manager and discovered an APP titled FaH 7 was consuming some 50% of the CPUs effort. I had run Folding @ Home very briefly several months back but I thought I had deleted all facets of the application when I exited the project. In fact, no tasks associated with Folding have been running on any of my computers for several months. My Xeon powered machine is now crunching WCG,etc., at an efficiency rating of over 99%; in fact several completed tasks had CPU time and Elapsed time that were equal. Again thanks to Master Cruncher for providing the solution that was creating an horrific waste of processing time because of the unwanted interference by FaH 7 on this one computer. I enjoy so much the many years I have contributed to distributed computing through the BOINC system. Bill Central Texas USA |

Thanks for your contribution! I can only hope I would still be crunching at your age.
God Bless you, Bill. |
