WCG project resource allocation

Is there any way how to regulate amount of ressources between WCG research projects?

Re: WCG project resource allocation

On your device profiles https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewDevices.do

You can choose how many concurrent tasks of each project are assigned at the same time.

Example:

2 OPN, 1 FAAH2, 2 MIP, 2 MCM etc.
----------------------------------------

- AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W
- AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W
- AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz

Re: WCG project resource allocation

Changing the setting in the custom device profile is excellent. It determines resource allocation on the number tasks downloaded for each WCG subproject per device. But if that's not what you want Walkingrock (for example, you want to download enough work to crunch for half a day or one day at a time and that setting is too broad), then another way is to open up a plain text editor like Notepad or Notepad++ and saving a file named app_config.xml in the WCG project directory. On Windows, that would be C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org\app_config.xml

Basic layout:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>name</name>
<max_concurrent>N</max_concurrent>
</app>
</app_config>

Change the "name" for each WCG subproject you want to control and "N" for the maximum number of tasks you want to run on that machine at a time.

* mip1 for Microbiome Immunity Project
* mcm1 for Mapping Cancer Markers
* hst1 for Help Stop TB
* scc1 for Smash Childhood Cancer
* arp1 for Africa Rainfall Project
* opn1 for OpenPandemics - COVID 19

Example to limit MIP1 to 2 and OPN1 to 5 and ARP1 to 1:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>mip1</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
</app>
<app>
<name>opn1</name>
<max_concurrent>5</max_concurrent>
</app>
<app>
<name>arp1</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>
</app_config>

----------------------------------------
  • i5-7500 (Kaby Lake, 4C/4T) @ 3.4 GHz
  • i5-4590 (Haswell, 4C/4T) @ 3.3 GHz
  • i5-3570 (Broadwell, 4C/4T) @ 3.4 GHz

Re: WCG project resource allocation

Thanks hchc, I always wondered what the app names were for WCG. All other BOINC projects seem to have an apps.php?xml=1 page that gives them to you.

Here's a neat trick I just discovered...
To get app name for any application on WCG, go to...
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProjects.do
Then hover your mouse over each application to see URL.

I guess the WCG project calls their applications "projects". Weird.

Re: WCG project resource allocation

The project acronyms are actually part of the task names, albeit capitalized and always the characters before the first underscore.

OPN1_0001479_03008_0 02:59:44 (02:56:09) 98.00 98.702 00:02:21 6/3/2020 5:06:52 PM 6/10/2020 5:06:51 PM Running [15]

For app_config.xml write it out in small, it must be small as else it's not recognized by BOINC. Exception are the beta tasks. They are beta + a sequence number, the last beta28, which was the one for opn1.

Re: WCG project resource allocation

I just noticed that sometimes the link I gave and executable name are different from task name. "fahb" appears at link, and the following is the executable name for my macOS (also "fahb")...
wcgrid_fahb_bedam_7.30_x86_64-apple-darwin

But "FAH2" appears before underscore of task name...
FAH2_002726_zinc02873046_000002_000064_179
So I guess "fah2" is the BOINC application name. Unnecessary inconsistency.

I can manage with what I have.
Boinc has four choices, so I have different project mixes for 12 thread computers, 8 thread computers, 6 thread computers, and this laptop and another computer running at 50% to 60% power. As-is, the setting allows up to 64 of each project to run unless you have no maximum and only fill up the queue size. I wonder whether BOINC will ever come out with more than four device choices.

There's a history of why that is. FAAH aka Phase 1 had 2 applications Autodock and later on Autodock VINA, FAH2 signifies Phase 2 and uses the bedam application which is part of the phase 2 application name where the B in FAHB referes to the Bedam version. Anyway, the project is done, just few last returns today. If it returns the scientist have not decided.

Btw for the et al, the latest client app_config. xml is no longer lower case sensitive, so the updated manual says. FAHB ARP1 MCM1 etc should work too. Not tested this change though.

Re: WCG project resource allocation

Does exist an official DTD for app_config.xml ?

Re: WCG project resource allocation

DTD?... it's always been part of the BOINC client configuration wiki if you want to call that a DTD https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration . It was updated to reflect the uppercase app names is legal too "Both the <name> and <app_name> containers may contain uppercase characters for the application name."
