CUDA on Nvidia is faster. That is why Nvidia did it. If OpenCl were faster, they could have stayed with that and saved themselves the development money, for both the hardware and the software. I would have thought that was obvious, or should have been. CUDA is older than OpenCl (about 2 years before, a lot of time in gpgpu's field). So Nvidia started with HIS closed platform that works great with HIS hw. Why pass to OpenCl?? Also AMD/ATI had HIS platform, but after passed to OpenCl (and now to Rocm). I know that, for example, OpenCl is fantastic with FPGA, but there is no boinc project that use this kind of technology. P.S. I have only AMD gpu on my pc, so i prefer an OpenCl app for this project ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by [VENETO] boboviz at Jul 2, 2020 7:11:30 PM] |

OpenCl 2.0 (though 1.2 is actually what is used) is as old as the hills. They use it to date the dinosaur extinction.
CUDA 10.2 is newer and faster. CUDA 11 will be out soon. If I ever see an FPGA, I will try OpenCl. Let me know. |

I hope we get the two versions. The OpenCL version that runs much, much better on AMD cards and CUDA that only runs on Nvidia.

Whichever version they use (hopefully both), I will be comparing my GTX 1060 (3 GB) to my RX 570.
The RX 570 has somewhat better single-precision specs, but the GTX 1060 always does better on Folding, even though that is only OpenCl at the moment. They should be releasing a CUDA version soon, which will make the gap wider. |
