Hi all
I've been an intermittent but long standing member of WCG (first registered in 2005) and have returned after been out of the game for quite a few years. I want to try and help with the COVID-19 issue; one small way of helping I guess. I have 3 computers dialled into the CODVID-19 Project. I have always wondered, though; if one of my computers happens to be the one that finds something critical\important\significant to the COVID defeat battle, will I get an e-mail or something? Or are all the results totally anonomised? I ask just because it would be great if I, or one of us, helped find the key to the problem! |

AFAIK, no. Never happened while I've been here.

it would be cool - but it certainly wouldn't be easy. Especially because of the volume of WUs, and how long it can take to analyze the resulting data.

I don't think any single machine "finds the key" by itself. The way I understand is each simulation is broken down into multiple work units and collectively they give a result. So either way it's a group effort since many people would have worked on the simulation together.
----------------------------------------What I am more curious about is the sharing of discoveries. At GPUGrid for example, you can see what research papers were published as a result of what your machine participated in. Of course the credit wouldn't be your machine's alone, but many thousands of contributors that worked on it. It would be good if on WCG you could have that implemented too and for users to access the research paper if they wanted to read it. ![]() |

On the token of 'Research Paper' the News link has a tick box for Research Paper but what you get back is a mishmash, news and the like. https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/d...amp;sortBy=&pageNum=1 It would be nice if admin could spent a little time to verify that all papers derived from WCG projects are linked up, represented, and not pay-walled. 12 papers from 2016 to 2020, less that 60 in 15+ years, that's rather thin. thx. |

and another reason to not do this (as much as I would REALLY REALLY like to know) ... is imagine the potential for lawsuits!

Most of the work in any research is eliminating the wrong ones. If it is found, we will all have played our part.

We agree that it is important to ensure that papers which are published as a result of World Community Grid volunteers' contributions are represented. Here's our approach: We meet with each research group on a regular basis (more regularly for projects actively running on World Community Grid). One of the agenda items is discussing research findings and the status of any paper publications. Importantly, this is also our opportunity to understand whether a paper the team is publishing is directly leveraging their work on and data from World Community Grid or not. Once a paper is published, we work with the research team to ensure that the paper is included in their World Community Grid project update, and that's when the 'Research Paper' tag is used. If the project update mentions a paper that did not directly leverage the researchers' work on World Community Grid, the 'Research Paper' tag is not used. Our research partners publish their work in a wide variety of journals and publications, which don't always provide free access. Whether a paper is pay-walled or not, is unfortunately not something that we or our research partners can control. Many thanks all for your continued support, Juan |
