Raspberry Pi 4 8GB out! $75 (May 2020)

Great timing.

Also notable is Raspbian (at least the OS image that the Foundation releases) has been renamed to Raspberry Pi OS. A 64-bit build of the OS is also in beta and works on existing 3b, 3b+, and 4b devices.

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 8GB out! $75 (May 2020)

Oh neat! I hope OpenPandemics starts working on 64-bit Linux on ARM soon.

I just discovered that you can now get the 2-GB RAM model for $35. To get everything you need to run WCG on lots of Pi's, the following links should be useful...
(1) Pi including heat sinks and power supply for $50: https://www.canakit.com/raspberry-pi-4-basic-kit.html
(2) a ton of class-10 microSD cards for cheap: https://www.amazon.com/Micro-Negro-v%C3%ADdeo-Full-paquete/dp/B07RPVH4QQ/

Edit: These links are good in the US at least.

Another edit: looks like you can now run WCG on 64-bit Linux on ARM with a little hack...

32bit Pi OS installed for Open Pandemics. Four Pi 3B, two Pi 2B and one Pi Zero. I ordered a Pi 4B 2GB to compare. Multi USB power charger. It's fun.

For this benchmark, the 4B has twice the gigaFLOPS/watt as the 3B, which was already quite energy efficient!

ARM is incredible!

That is pretty insane, especially considering the chip is now 5 years old. Looking forward to more SBCs with A7x SOCs in the future.

For comparison (though I know this is kinda apples to oranges):
3900X 142W at full load, 130GFLOPS .

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 8GB out! $75 (May 2020)

Looks like the Raspberry Pi has always used 40nm transistors, but the Pi 4B is the first Pi to use 28nm.

I can only imagine how efficient the Pi 4B's Cortex-A72 would be at 16 nm (its min. feature size).

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 8GB out! $75 (May 2020)

Whoa, poppin. I'd never checked the Wikipedia page for the A72. But apparently it's already been superseded by many newer generations of SoC.

Can't wait for the Raspberry Pi 5 series and any other SBC maker (e.g. Odroid) to use the latest and greatest.

We're probably less than 10 years away from the point that a smartphone can also dock when at home or work and serve as a desktop PC replacement for most people for most use cases. Just needs a docking station (perhaps 60 GHz wireless like 802.11ay) or USB4/Thunderbolt 3.

Yep, like I said above, the A72 is 5 years old. The ODroid N2 is the only mainstream SBC I know of that is currently using a more recent version of the A7x series, in the form of the A73 (at 12nm). I doubt SBCs will ever really "catch up", it just gets too expensive to manufacturer the lastest and greatest.

Check out Samsung DeX!

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 8GB out! $75 (May 2020)

According to this forum post which links to the official blog post's comments thread, the Compute Module 4 should be released some time in 2020. I hope the CM4 turns out to be a cheaper product than buying individual Pi 4Bs for those of us considering putting together a cluster for crunching purposes.

Edited to Add: This forum post states that the Pi 5 will be "years away" but that "loads of other exciting stuff" will be out in the interim.
