Re: Power Consumption

I am a big crunch for MCM and have recently switched to COVID-19 just to help out the pandemic.

I am having a few machines running:
1. i7-7700HQ
2. i7-8565U
3. Ryzen 9 3900X
4. ThreadRipper 3960X
5. Ryzen 7 2700X

I am always running all CPU 24/7 100%. I notice that COVID-19 project draws about 10% less power that MCM and the heat generated from COVID-19 is about 4 degree less at full load.

Anyone else see this happens as well? It looks like MCM is quite powerful hungry or COVID-19 is more energy efficient.

The problems to be solved require different algorithms which use the cpu differently. I'm sure you could heat those cpus even more with the LinX benchmark for example. I'm not sure we can talk about energy efficiency.

Re: Power Consumption

OPN1 is bringing at least 10% less credit than MCM on Linux
---
PS: Maybe adriverhoef can confirm with his extensive data collection.

It's nice that you're thinking of me, Yves. This is what I've found out:

Although the MCM1 runtimes vary wildly and OPN1 runtimes don't vary that much, their average credit values are close to each other.

During the past half year, about 11,000 MCM1 and 1700 OPN1 of my results have been uploaded at the moment.
The average runtime of MCM1 tasks is roughly 3½ hours, while the OPN1 tasks last 2⅔ hours on average here,
and MCM1 gets 33.4 credits per hour, while OPN1 receives 32.4. So there's not much difference. YMMV.

(BOINC operating with hyperthreading on and computer running 24/7 at 100% on Fedora Linux) cool

Re: Power Consumption

Hi adriverhoef,
are your machines Intel or AMD based?
With Linux Mint 19.3 / Ubuntu 18.04, the difference for two Ryzen 7 2700X is 13'000 (OPN1) vs. 16'000 credit/day (MCM); 22'000 with OET1, 20'000 with SCC1.
Cheers,
Yves

That would be Intel, Yves, at least for the past 10 years. Wore out and/or retired a bunch of computers since 1990 …
