Inefficient Androids

Hi all,

I've got a few android phones dedicated to BOINC running on OPN and the run times are way higher than I've seen them get on any other task - some at 44/45 hours, but with only 22ish hours of CPU time. These WUs should take about 20-24 hours on this phone (Huawei P9 lite) - as I know they are doing that on an identical phone. Whatever time these WUs complete in, the CPU time is approx half of that... Is there any reason this could be? My settings are the same as the other phone - run all the time at 100% on all 8 cores. And is there any way to fix this issue and make the tasks run in the time they should take?

TIA
Chris

Sounds like something in the background is hogging CPU cycles if CPU time is half the run time. Need to dig. Is the display staying on?

Re: Inefficient Androids

Both my Androids run 99%+ efficient, one v7 with 7.16.3 and the other v6 and 7.4.53.

P9 is old, might get hot a bit and make the app suspend from time to time. My suggestion is try 1 core first to see if the WU finishes quicker. If yes, then try more.

Another possibility is there are some other apps running in the background. 8 core running means 8 WUs, need more RAM than 1 WU.

Anyway, I just checked one of the WUs on my phone, it's taking more time than others, 23hrs already. Maybe some WUs need longer time to finish.

Originally I had it staying on, but then found a setting that protects BOINC even with the screen off so that it won't stop it after the screen goes off. And I wondered if anything was hogging the cycles but I don't know what would as I set it up exclusively for BOINC.

My suggestion is try 1 core first to see if the WU finishes quicker. If yes, then try more.

I'll try this in a moment then - didn't try it yet because the other phone is happily cruising along on 8 cores with 8 WUs at about 90-95% efficiency...

The Huawei P9 lite uses a Kirin 650 processor with an Arm big.LITTLE 4+4 cluster setup. Typically only one core cluster or the other will be active, and long, heavy tasks will be scheduled onto the LITTLE cluster.

In other words, for BOINC, you should treat your phone has having 4 cores, not 8.

Re: Inefficient Androids

So is that for BOINC overall or per project? I've limited it to 4 cores and it seems to be making more efficient - will know for sure when the results are returned. I just find it odd that the other P9 lite isn't having much of an issue, but this one is...

It's an Android or ARM thing. The little cores are used to run programs, the BIG cores are used for starting applications and short bursts.

Ok, so the P9 uses a what we call pseudo-8 core, not a a real 8 core like newer chips. Hmmm, that might be the problem.

Re: Inefficient Androids

A related problem, possibly.

I needed to download some old stuff from a retired AMD Athlon 2 core 3800+, so I thought I would run opn on it while it was connected. I am getting elapsed times double my CPU times. Task Manager is never showing more than 49% for either of the units running. Sometimes it is 0/40+ and occasionally it is say 23/25 or thereabouts.

Nothing else is currently running on the machine. It is running Vista SP2 with 3 GB RAM.

I am only keeping it in reserve normally in case my main machine breaks down so that I can run my Bank program which uses MS DOS.
