Re: Hyperthreading....

So, I did a test on my 3900X (12/24 cores/threads, RAM at 3600 MHz, no GPU work) for OpenPandemics WUs.

SMT on (24 WUs parallel):
106 minutes per WU (324 WUs per day) at 81°C CPU temp consuming 142W/h (10,45W per WU)

SMT off (12 WUs parallel):
61 minutes per WU (283 WUs per day) at 74°C CPU temp consuming 122W/h (10,00W per WU)

Re: Hyperthreading....

So 0.48KW gives 41 results more, the old 15% or so uplift for using HT. At all-in 17 cents per KW that's cheap say 8 cents a day for just feeding the CPU, if my math is correct.

Re: Hyperthreading....

81°C for the CPU is relatively hot.
I would recommend to verify the airflow within the computer case and maybe to consider to change for a better CPU cooler and to use a good thermal paste.
I would try to keep the CPU not hotter than 65°C at 100%.
If you verify the airflow within the case, you should also ensure that the voltage regulators (around the CPU) as well as the memory sticks are well ventilated and cooled.
Cheers,
Yves

PS: I do not use water cooling system only "dry cooler".

Re: Hyperthreading....

There's also the option to lower the cycles. My machine at 99% in the Windows settings app, it runs at 3.4Ghz per CoreTemp at 100% the turbo kicks in and the CPU jumps to 3.7Ghz eating 64W (Package), 52W (IA Cores, In-CPU sensor supposedly).

But, a can of compressed air, hibernating the PC for a moment, a cleaning out of the sink dropped temps to 71C at full torque, not bad for an ambient temp of 26C, just a summer hiss in the background.

Re: Hyperthreading....

I also recently added a Ryzen machine, starting out with a 3900x with the stock cooler. I also saw temps over 80c which had me concerned about long term stability. I replaced the stock cooler with a Noctua and saw a 20c drop in temps under the same load (hyperthreading on). The system was quite stable and cool enough that I tried swapping out the 3900x for a 3950x - surprisingly, no increase in temps for the extra cores!

Re: Hyperthreading....

I always run 75% core use, leaving whatever open for the GPU and F@H currently.

Florida is HOT this time of year, so need Ac to offset extra watts which I avoid, I run CPU harder in winter when it's 'cold'

No OC 8150 and 8350 have been running since birth on everything from LTC to this, plan to swap them out for Ryzen someday, but they run fine, few PSU died on occasion :D

Well, this is a pretty hot CPU biggrin using the stock cooler it reached 95°C where it automatically throttles down. So I'm quite happy with the current temps, after replacing the stock with a dual 120mm tower cooler and moving the gpu one slot down to improve airflow.

Re: Hyperthreading....

I have a Ryzen 5 1600 with SMT deactivated in the Bios, frequency @ 3.1Ghz at 1.0v .... Cooling with a Pure Rock Be Quiet, max temperature 52-56 °c.

In my opinion, activating SMT does not have a real advantage for productivity.

The gain is ballpark 15%, at least on the Intel version of HT.
