Work units from OpenPandemics are downloaded, but then fail immediately on two Apple Macs (OS 10.6) with the following message:
<![CDATA[ While these Macs have 64-bit processors, both have 32-bit kernels and are incapable of booting into 64-bit mode. Is this the reason OpenPandemics work units fail on these machines? |

Thanks for your reply and for the link explaining the "process got signal 5" error message. I noticed that work units from the Microbiome Immunity Project are also failing on these two Macs with the same error. So, I'll drop the OpenPandemics and MIP from My Projects list.
I'm clueless about how project applications run, but I'm surprised that work units would be downloaded to a computer that can't process the work. |

It's an interesting question. Certainly when we look at the result status pages we instantly see the OS build, detail versioning printed out of all the devices that got a copy of the work unit. If the returned result statistics say there is a 100% failure for all the clients that run on a certain OS for a certain application, the feeder could maybe be educated. Right now eventually the feed drops to 1 a day until the error is resolved. The feeder checks memory during assignment, storage space, so OS version might be a parameter to add.... hmmm, would such a table slow things down a lot server side? Don't know why this check does not exist, a question for the techs.

Hi lavaflow--After reading your explanation, I've again added OpenPandemics and the Microbiome Immunity Project to my old Macs (even though I know work units will end with a computer error) to help flag and resolve the problem of assigning work to an incompatible computer.

Why didn't libc++.1.dylib not load? Does it exist in /usr/lib? If not, can it be installed? Sounds like a missing dynamic library

Hi entity--Your questions are excellent, but the only one I can answer is that it doesn't appear to be in /usr/lib. The app developers should be able to answer why libc++.1.dylib didn't load and how to install it. I wish I knew; maybe this is the key to getting the OpenPandemics app to work with old Mac OS.

I'm not familiar with MacOS but it looks like the developers have built the science module that references that dynamic library. If there isn't a version that works on 10.6, it may not be possible to run the science there unless the developers rebuild the module referencing another library.I'm saying that with a whole lot of uncertainty though.
----------------------------------------After a little googling I found this snippet: For future searches, the original poster posted that they were using Mac OS 10.6. which was subsumed by Mac OS Lion in 2011. libc++ was not included in Mac OS Snow Leopward because Apple had not switched to Clang and libc++ yet. There are other entries out there that suggest installing Clang on 10.6 or building the module from source. Will it work? I don't have any idea. It is what you are comfortable doing. In short, it sounds like OPN on MAC OS requires MAC OS to be at least at MAC OS Lion (version ?). That is about as much help as I can provide. It doesn't take long for me to reach the limit of my knowledge Good luck.[Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 19, 2020 11:29:52 PM] |

I know this won't be much help but it could be something similar to what is done with older versions of windows. OPN1 will not run on windows XP because it is compiled to run on versions 6 and above on windows.(That would be Vista and above) XP is a version 5 but by modifying the executable OPN1 will run without errors on XP. I'm guessing that Macs probably won't allow you to do that, especially if it involves a lib. Frustrating for sure.

If libc++ is not included with Snow Leopard, then I'm out of luck because that's the OS both of my Macs are using. And unless the OpenPandemic app developers fix it to run on Mac OS 10.6, I'm doubly out of luck because compiling is far beyond my knowledge and ability.
I'm very grateful to all who offered comments in response to my question. Many thanks! |
