It seems that OPN1 WU's can be sent to different operating systems.
----------------------------------------I received one on my old Android cellphone, which was validated on Android but failed twice on Win 8.1, per below. Furthermore, looking at some of the resends I have been receiving, it seems that Win 8.1. has quite a high error rates. Usually (MCM is probably the exception) Linux is more efficient than Windows, since Linux has a better memory management.
----------------------------------------For OPN1, I don't know how the situation is currently, since the WUs are not really comparable (depending of ligant number and type). After a couple of week, we will probably have a better view. On my side, autodock based sciences run really well and effective on Linux. I've just noticed that the memory usage on my Windows 7 x64 based machine is relatively high (OS + 8 threads = 5.5 GB) comparing to MCM or SCC1 with significantly less than 4 GB for the same configuration. I cannot tell if it is the rule or just an exception depending of the starting phase (more activated debug options in the project? ...). Cheers, Yves |

Linux is only more efficient on the Integer part. Compare on dual boot the Whetstone/Dhrystone benchmark tests, float is practically identical. No, few integers, same performance. Seem to recollect there was even a slower on Linux compared to Windows.
----------------------------------------edit: WuProp could reveal the average runtimes per OS, but that's only when devices are linked to WuProp, i.e. the data there is partial. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 16, 2020 12:26:44 PM] |

Same host but:
----------------------------------------Ubuntu 18.04 based - https://universeathome.pl/universe/show_host_detail.php?hostid=554074 Ubuntu 20.04 based - https://universeathome.pl/universe/show_host_detail.php?hostid=554097 Windows 10 64-bit - https://quchempedia.univ-angers.fr/athome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1801 I noticed back in April that, from 18.04 to 20.04, the BOINC benchmark figures change quite drastically. Back then, I tried updating to the same Kernel and BOINC version on 18.04 as on 20.04 but there was no difference in the benchmark numbers. 20.04 has more floating point than Windows 10 or 18.04 but less integer than 18.04. Something changed on 20.04. Effect on crunching? Back in early April, I thought 20.04 was crunching SCC a bit faster... but I didn't really test it. I ran 8 OPN1 on 20.04: OPN1_ 0000057_ 11512_ 1-- Xubuntu Pending Validation 15/05/20 12:00:02 15/05/20 15:40:52 3,55 / 3,66 149,5 / 0,0 OPN1_ 0000082_ 02407_ 1-- Xubuntu Pending Validation 15/05/20 12:00:02 15/05/20 15:35:27 3,46 / 3,57 145,7 / 0,0 OPN1_ 0000056_ 04865_ 1-- Xubuntu Pending Validation 15/05/20 12:00:02 15/05/20 15:25:58 3,31 / 3,42 140,1 / 0,0 OPN1_ 0000056_ 04841_ 1-- Xubuntu Pending Validation 15/05/20 12:00:02 15/05/20 15:21:40 3,24 / 3,35 137,1 / 0,0 OPN1_ 0000082_ 02427_ 1-- Xubuntu Pending Validation 15/05/20 12:00:02 15/05/20 15:35:27 3,46 / 3,57 145,7 / 0,0 OPN1_ 0000082_ 02421_ 1-- Xubuntu Pending Validation 15/05/20 12:00:02 15/05/20 15:33:19 3,43 / 3,54 144,7 / 0,0 OPN1_ 0000051_ 02164_ 1-- Xubuntu Pending Validation 15/05/20 12:00:02 15/05/20 15:38:45 3,53 / 3,64 148,6 / 0,0 OPN1_ 0000065_ 03473_ 1-- Xubuntu Valid 15/05/20 12:00:02 15/05/20 15:28:31 3,36 / 3,47 141,8 / 99,7 Don't see any significant difference compared to Windows 10, which has a lot more OPN1 results by now. OP Covid Project:
Ubuntu 20.04 @ 2.8GHz HT Off, 2.3hrs ave completion time Win10 @ 3.4GHz Mult-thread On, 2.5hrs ave completion time Assuming multi-threading is responsible for the 9% longer completion times, then it looks like 2.5hrs to complete at 2.8GHz in Linux vs 2.5hr to complete at 3.4Ghz in Win10. So, isn't Linux about 20% faster to complete than Win 10, i.e. 3.4/2.8 =1.21? Too simplistic? Apples to oranges? |

FWIW I noticed the same thing during the beta. 90%+ of the resends I received were from Win 8.1 machines. IIRC the error was something about the client not having the correct privileges to start and the task errored with 0 runtime.

20.04 has more floating point than Windows 10 or 18.04 but less integer than 18.04. Integer used to be bench-marking like 3 times higher on Ubuntu v Windows, so your observation reads like something went up the creek... more float, less integer. Of course the question is then if there is a benchmark differential on the same version of Ubuntu for the different BOINC builds. Probably there's just need for a larger body of actual runtime data to get the picture right, but now with these added variables not sure if you can determine which is which and what does how well or poor. Think I'll just see what the tea leaves and stars come up with. |
