Hello folks;
Since some time I am having very bad and wildly varying performance on my Athlon 200GE computer. It started when we switched to the new MCM Sarcoma WUs, but that can be a coincidence. This CPU now needs between 3 and 9 hours to finish a work unit! Before it needed only about 3-4 hours to do a work unit, and the performance was very consistent. Has anyone an idea what could be wrong? Could there be a problem with the power delivery system like the VRMs on the mobo or the power supply? The PC is just 2 years old. Some observations: - The PC runs nothing else but BOINC for Mapping Cancer Markers. - The CPU speed is normal at 3.2Ghz. - The CPU temperature is perfect at about 35 degrees Celsius. - It has 8Gb of RAM but needs less than 3 Gb to run, so plenty. - When I pauze BOINC, the CPU usage goes down to almost zero, so there is effectively nothing else eating up resources. - Windows 10 runs very snappy as usual, so the problem seems to only affect software which needs 100% CPU usage. I does run on a cheap Asrock A320 motherboard which does not have cooling fins on the VRMs, but as the Athlon 200GE only has a TDP of 35 Watts, I did not think this would be a problem. Could it be that that mobo is already having problems after just 2 years? I have NO IDEA what is going on... Any input is greatly appreciated; Thanks! Carl Philip |

The inside of the computer is clean, no howling of cooling fans, the heat-sink on the CPU has not come loose?

Hi;
No, everything is perfect inside the PC. Like I said, the CPU temperature is just 35 degrees. So the fans work and the CPU cooler is in its place. |

Try running just one work unit and see if the performance improves. You may have a memory problem bottleneck.

Check the speed the CPU is actually running at. On one of PC if it shutdown abnormally, when it starts back, the CPU is running at less than 1Ghz until I restart it.

At 35C I wonder if it's actually crunching "when in use".

Try running just one work unit and see if the performance improves. You may have a memory problem bottleneck. Cheers Thanks Sgt. Joe for giving me another idea: Indeed I can check for memory problems. I'll try running just 1 work unit, and then I'l see using other memory modules changes anything, or use just 1 memory module, or ... I'll keep you informed. Thanks again; Carl Philip |

At 35C I wonder if it's actually crunching "when in use". Yeah but even before the problem arose the chip never got any hotter, except maybe in summer. The Athlon 200GE runs very cool. And i just use the stock cooler. But indeed it looks as if it is running at 100%, but it just crunches just about half the time or something. Nevertheless, I have checked in Windows Task Manager: Nothing else is eating up resources. As soon as I pauze BOINC, cpu usage goes down to almost zero. I just don't get it. Thanks for the input. |

Check the speed the CPU is actually running at. On one of PC if it shutdown abnormally, when it starts back, the CPU is running at less than 1Ghz until I restart it. The CPU is running at its normal speed: 3.2Ghz at 100% load. So I don't think the CPU is the problem. And the PC runs 100% stable. Thanks for your input. |

I'll check Sgt. Joe's idea about the memory:
I'll try running just 1 WU, see if that is finished within an normal time frame. And I'll replace the modules by just 1 module from another pc of which I know it works perfectly. Thank you folks for the input. I'll keep you informed. Be safe; Carl Philip |
