Code of Ethics for projects?

Hello,

first, apologies, if this is already somewhere described and I am asking the obvious (and if it is, I would appreciate any link).
Whom are we actually helping? Research centres? Private companies? I mean, if we spend our computing power to contribute to a drug development against serious illness for a private company, that will then sell for serious money it, I don`t want to volunteer.

Do we have it ensured somehow, that this won`t happen?

Thanks to all your answers.

I don't know all of the specifics, but I do know that IBM has a requirement that all of the projects that take advantage of the World Community Grid compute power must release all of their results to the public.

Re: Code of Ethics for projects?

As Chase mentioned, WCG requires all projects to release all raw data computed by WCG to the public. You can download the data yourself (See the DFSL, SN2S, Nutritious Rice for the World Projects, for example)

AFAIK, there are no private companies behind any of the projects, past or present. There are mostly public Universities, Research Centers or private non-profit Research Centers like Scripps Research.

I seem to recall something about proposed projects that were never approved by WCG exactly because they did not want to release the data into the public.

Public data releases meaning anyone can use the data.

Re: Code of Ethics for projects?

Just as it should be. Several other projects follow this model too, I believe; Folding@Home i.e?
