I had the same issue at first. Turns out my company has set a security policy that sets a minimum password length of 14 characters. The password set for the boinc_master account must be shorter than that. I temporarily set it to 5 characters for the install, then set it back again afterwards. To change this setting, run secpol.msc, then find the "Minimum password length" setting under Account Policies\Password Policy.

New Version of World Community Grid Software for emphasis.
It's a bit of a puzzle, the 7.14.3 WCG Windows build with some [IBM's ?] code extension is not found on the central BOINC download repository, but 7.14.5 for MAC is, without said code extension. Also it seems Dr Anderson build a new 7.16.6 for Linux, but he gives a warning with that one. Build on one Linux(Ubuntu) may not work on another. Anyway, 7.14.3 build for Windows does not exist at all at the BOINC repository i.e. it's WCG only skinned kit, born mostly for volunteer corporate satisfaction, where 7.16.5 now seems promoted as 'recommended' (it seems to have some complex scheduling modification to prevent starvation of resources when using max_concurrent). Never had the problem, so no need to break what's not broken on my crunchers and stick with 7.16.3 for Android resp. 7.14.2 on Windows. PS, when going for the Android download, the 'What's New' is giving version 7.4.53, still |

I think that the discrepancy between WCG version and BOINC version of the software was explained by WCG techs some time ago. Basically it's caused by the fact that WCG version of the BOINC agent is subject to thorough checking and security audit, hence they release it only from time to time - such checks takes time and money. If there is no huge change in functionality or features of the agent, there is no need to redo it and to release an updated version, since the current version works just fine. Usually there is no problem with using the current version of the BOINC agent, at least I do not remember any issues related to that - so, if you're tempted to use it, just do it :) so because my BOINC Client is already at 7.16.5 - I don't need to do anything. Cool. Got it. @katoda - your comments are correct. @yoerik - Yup - BOINC version 7.16.5 has the same security fixes. I would suggest that the WCG version can be thought of as a Long Term Support version (i.e. it is stable for a longer period of time and incorporates security fixes or other key fixes) and the BOINC version has more rapid iterative releases that includes the latest features developed by the community. The analogy isn't perfect but describes our thinking about the two versions. Specifically, we deploy the client internally at IBM through our internal app stores as well as help other companies that choose to support us. We need a stable version that we understand well along with extra security reviews that we can recommend to them. Our version provides that. The BOINC version is able to be more rapid and iterative. |

I tried to download and install the new client for windows, but during "validating user accounts used by BOINC for secure sandboxes" there is an error: "Failed to reset password on the boinc_master account." Then installation stops. I left everything on defaults @DEINDL - can you let us know if the suggestion by @Danogian helps? Thanks. |

Turns out my company has set a security policy that sets a minimum password length of 14 characters. Thanks! Temporarily setting the password-length to 5 solved my problem! Bye, Michael |

Good. Just wanted to make sure. I crunch other projects as well, so I'll be sticking with the BOINC Client - but I'm glad people have the option to run WCG alone, as tested internally with IBM. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by yoerik at Apr 14, 2020 3:02:51 PM] |

The WCG version is as good as the Berkeley release, you can attach any project you want, lest there's that cc_config code line that forbids attaching projects.

Have to ask though - is the manager/client significantly different than BOINC manager? AKA - do I have an end-user motive to switch over, besides a slight delay in updates? Gain/lose any functionality, etc? ![]() |

Except for the skin when in simple view, zero zippo difference in the user front end and as knreed explained, really underneath it neither, a 7.16.5 code level integration included.
