Best way to run Ryzen 1700x

Hi all...

So, I have a Ryzen 1700 x which is 8 cores and 8 threads. If I run full out (16 jobs at once), the cpu runs at 100% but all the jobs take about twice as long as if I run 8 jobs at 100%. I think the threads just thrash around. For much of the night, nothing is running other than WCG. Any ideas to best set this up?

Thanks

BTW,I have 16gb memory, and I set my max cpu to 99% which really helped with the noise of the fans. Thanks to Redneck567 for that idea...

Re: Best way to run Ryzen 1700x

You should limit the number of MIP1 tasks to about 4 and the number of FAAH2 to about 2 so it doesn't constantly pre-empt other tasks.. Any more than that and you will get too many cache misses and that will slow things down.
Cheers

Re: Best way to run Ryzen 1700x

I have been running my 1700 24/7 for over a year. Today it is limited via app.config to max of 3 ARP, 3 MIP1 and 13 MCM1 concurrently. Completion times are about 19 hours for ARP, 2.75 for MIP1 and 4 for MCM1. RAM is 16GB, Temperature is 63 with the standard wraith cooler.

Re: Best way to run Ryzen 1700x

Running 16 jobs on 8 cores means Hyperthreading is used, which leads to every job running slower than if you only run 8 jobs on 8 cores. Nevertheless, for most applications, using Hyperthreading should lead to increased overall thoughput, meaning jobs do take longer, but less than twice as long. For current WCG projects that is also true as far as I know.

So I would suggest running 16 jobs on the 1700X.

Re: Best way to run Ryzen 1700x

Thanks all. Peter, that is exactly the temp I get when using 16 jobs. My rig is a whole lot quiter running 8 jobs full out though. So, that is where I will contribute. Thanks very much for all the thoughts. Mitch

Have you considered a better cpu cooler? The better ones run pretty quiet.
